I'm not sure that follows. If I'm looking to invest short-term advertising dollars, then I definitely sign up to sponsor Riis for the month of August 2012 and not a day longer than Contador is wearing Saxo colors. Of course, Riis is going to want long-term dollars and commitment, which he won't get when his star is flying the coop a month after returning from suspension. He'll have very few WT points and unless he's successful in signing up a bunch of points (which is not guaranteed) he's likely not going to WT and without Contador won't garner many invitations to GTs. At least that's how I see things.

Yes but there is also the fact that Saxo Bank will be willing to pool in more money as Riise has succeeded in creating publicity and also I believe that it will bring the team into the focus for possible sponsors more so then if they were not to win a GT.

Let's agree to disagree. :)

Well I bet Riis and Beto have a gentleman's agreement for this year already, but due to the recent hits his agent has been getting there is no need to go beyond this year just yet. If there are bigger and better offers I'm sure Beto is open to suggestions from the bank ;)

My google translate version suggests that AFTER the Vuelta the two are parting ways. That makes no sense. Why would Riis sign Contador to a VERY short-term contract to race 2 races? If he's not going to sign him for 2 years plus, why bother signing him for 2 races that he will get you exactly 0 WT points?

I think this is a bunch of noise. At least based on the google translated version.

yeh agree, makes little sense.
Can't wait to see AC back in the bunch.

Competing banks?

geographically and hence for deposits surely not.

Still there is publicity even for saying you are thinking about signing Contador, so many will.

Saxo isn't a "bank".

You might want to add some extra info before you lead the masses to a say's who debate:

Saxo Bank via WikiStuff

Saxo Bank is an online Danish investment bank. It was founded as a brokerage firm[1] in 1992, under the name Midas Fondsmæglerselskab, by Lars Seier Christensen, Kim Fournais and Marc Hauschildt. The name was changed to Saxo when the company obtained a banking license in 2001.

aren't into the invest management business?

santander could also fully sponsor riis and build a team around contador

Santander's profile is almost perfect for sponsoring Contador. An international firm with a strong domestic presence in his home country.

Ahh Emilio Botin land in cycling. Don't know if is good or bad.

What called my attention is when Alonso wanted to sponsor a team with Contador it was Banco Santander.

Hope if Bjarne and Alberto split it will be a mutual agree because of the difficult situation.

The vision of a team presentation with red jackets could remind me another with scarves:eek:

There may be some interesting movements next year, Kreuziger, Nibali, Contador. In that article wasn't Tiralongo mentioned?
One can dream no?

unless contador brings santander as saxo's main sponsor for next year

Was what I was thinking since Saxo only signs for one year at a time anyways. With the romours that Anfi will be new co-sponsor for Riis it could end up being a Spanish team (more or less) all together anyways.

One thing in the article from cyclingtime.it which strikes me being a bit weird is that a reason that Contador wants to leave is that Riis has shown no interest in the clen-case (i.e. not being suppotive), if I understand correctly? The is something Contador has praised Riis a lot for. And if he does infact leave the team after doing the Vuelta for Saxo Bank, that could could be a way of paying back a little.

Given Spain's financial situation and the precarious situation of the Spanish banks i doubt they will invest millions of euros in sport when they depend on public support to keep in business...

lol in gazzetta they say it's very possible contador will go back with bruyneel in 2013.the interesting thing is that becca wants him a lot lol.i think the man thought "with whom can i win the tour as fast as possible?"

both of schlecks to astana, now that would be terrible......

still i hope those are just false rumours by gazzeta as every year

I think the Contador to Bruyneel in 2013 is not so unbelievable.

Santandar reportedly pays Alonso €20 million a year, the other €10 coming from Ferrari (in addition Santander also sponsors Ferrari, McLaren and some race tracks), so no wonder Santander would also be a part of it if such a team is ever going to be formed. I reckon Samu would be a part of it too (it's the only way I can see Samu and Contador in one team), he is a good friend of Alonso. Don't think it will happen anytime soon though, Alonso seems to be more committed than ever and i don't think he will be looking for distractions.

By the way, I recently saw a picture of Alonso's bike computer thing after a bike ride, he did 32km/h over 120km, quite impressive.

But yeah, as sponsors go, this is one of the better paying ones in Spain.

No, that would probably be the best thing. Imagine some good quality time with Vino as DS, they'd grow a pair and would never be allowed to just hide in the pack. If they did try it I could easily imagine Vino driving up to them and while in the car grab them by the ear to force them up out of the pack. :D

Santander is doing fine, they are on a different planet compared to the local banks that are now in trouble. They have a lot of business in South America as well and are one of the few banks that made a profit in the years 2008-10. I know, because I bought shares of them and made 40% in two months before selling again

The "big" comapanies are not in difficult, they are spread over Europe and Latin America most of them. The nationality of a corporation is unimportant right now.

The banks with major problems are the little ones
