Movistar, as far as stage races are concerned, are the team with the most depth.

As for Contador, if it ever happens, it means that DAOTEC's predictions were right :p He predicted that Contador would join by 2013 iirc. But I honestly don't see it happen.

I'd be amazed if it was still in place. Can't see Specialised paying him to train for 6 months during the height of the season.

Exactly. Usually you'll lose your contracts when you get a doping suspension. It's standard procedure to put a clause like that in a contract (as a sponsor)...

Looooooooooool, stealth joke?

Haha, that was my first thought too.

I think it's interesting to think about what team will take him - who could absorb the cost, the non-WT points for the first 2 years, and still be strong enough to be WT? Movistar possibly, but when thinking about the question, and combined with the Specialized thing, I'd really say OPQS might be a good bet. Martin, Velits, Leip, they'd be a strong mountain team of guys that aren't strong enough to win themselves, which would be perfect for Conti. I have no idea how realistic this is, but in the abstract it makes sense.

Danish newspaper reports that Contador does not intend to return to Saxo Bank and that he is on his way to Movistar. They highlight some of the reason in bullets (which supposedly are elaborated on in the paper edition which I havent gotten a hold on yet):

-He has not been satisfied with the strenght of Saxo Bank
-He problems with adapting to the teams diet concepts
-He is annoyed with Riis's leadership (too controlling)

I'd go with the two bold phrases- Riis has always done things "his way" and by that I mean He's always trying to get the most with the least investment-IAW-how much can I get for nothing!! always with the "financial burden" to deal with-even when his riders are winning big races. Alberto-being the best-is rightfully entitled to request help-even when he's proved he's capable to take care of the races by himself-there is always that required support-specially when the other teams are building up in numbers strongly. The controlling part to me is more a "clash" between personalities-both with strong ones & ambitious-perhaps Alberto has a different approach than Bjarne, since he-Contador- has gone through so much troubling situations during his career-that he might feel bothered by Riis trying to "boss" him around -when the Spaniard has already proved his qualities over and over....

Now -as some of the folks wrote- the Conflict will be indeed his arrival to Movistar, having already in Valverde another strong Leader. This won't be near to the BMC innuendo. but a serious conflict of personal interests for each one and their individual ambitions- Contador being a proved multiple GC winner versus Valverde with his one GC and an impressive record between classics & week long races.... I mean- it's going to be hard indeed for them to work it out....

Nonetheless, you cant compare that situation with this. He honoured his contract at Astana and left at the end of it when it expired so he wasnt disloyal whatsoever.

In this situation he has got a lot of support off Riis and Saxo and so he owes a lot to them as a result. He should at least be loyal to them and i would be disappointed to see him ditch Saxo and leave them on their own on his return.

Lot of support when he was the only asset of the team and they couldn't get rid of him without an actual ban? Seems more like pragmatism.

Also it's not a question of loyalty. It's a question of various issues suddenly coming up in a previously "happy marriage" when contracts come up for extension.

Was the case with Astana. May be the case here.

Were any reasons of the transfer called in that case? There are no teams which would be agree to pay Contador such big money as Astana. Very likely Contador just chose Riis and his background to the prejudice of salary and quality of helpers
I think he will go to Movistar. 99%

He wanted out of Astana in 2009 unless some demands were met. A few months later his brother blew some hot air about staying another 2-3 years and only "small details" needed working out. Then another month later Riis signed him.

Funnily enough, Contador wanted a good support team in 2009 as one of the conditions for fulfilling his contract.

I certainly won't be shocked to see Contador leave Riis.
