A few continental guys is a good thing to have. Cardoso at 134 could be a good buy. Look at visconti last year getting huge ammounts of points and Vacan coming 8th overall, beating half the pt teams cq wise.

Great minds think alike.

Ah, but Andre Cardoso rides for a Continental team not a Pro Continental team. That's a huge diffrence.

i didn't noticed that xD well my team is pretty basic. i played a safe game. betting on a the main cobble rider(boonen, only cus was cheap this year ofc) and having 2 cheap options as back up(ballan and haussler) getting some guys who will win some stages and then the obvious young guns that can either do nothing or just explode with huge results.
ofc there is more into it but i have to wake up in a couple hours so i will explain my full method of selection(not only individually for each rider) after classes tomorrow ^_^

A PORTUGUESE CONTINENTAL TEAM(lol this was on purpose :p) so that means he will only get to ride some "minor" spanish races. ofc without blanco i can see him just blowing the entire volta field into oblivion but still that only gave blanco some off 300 points. unless ofc and this would be awesomesauce if palmeires risort tavira gets invited to the vuelta. i bet he can keep up with the big guys in the montains. srsly the work he did for blanco on this volta was just freaking epic. i will also provide links tomorrow.

still as this is a game he is not a great bet :p

Keeping track of the scores isn't tough.

CQ has a weekly .xls file available for download with the points of the various riders.

The annoying part isn't keeping the scores, it's getting the teams entered into a spreadsheet with names that exactly match what the CQrankings have. Once they match, you just do a simple vlookup based on the name entered in the spreadsheet, so we can download the weekly file, paste the sheet into the lookup sheet in the scoring excel file and everything will just update automatically.

I don't mind setting it up for Hugo if he's not an excel guy... but I'd appreciate help with the proper names for each person's team. If you want to either post your team here with the proper names that CQ uses, or PM them to me (or PM them to Hugo again if he wants to do it himself), it would save a bunch of time. Ferminal has a post earlier which apparently lists the proper names for all the riders selected.

I don't know what our commish wants to do about letting more people in... but with the spreadsheet setup that way there's not much time involved with updating scores. Of course the people coming later would be able to see the earlier crowd's entries, but having more take part is always fun.

This would be good. Spent hours last night doing a draft thinking there's time then its gets capped when I read page 4. Skipped to now so nfi what teams we're but its a shame. I guess full time work doesn't pay. :/

@ hitch . it was 2nd, with no luck involved. ;)

hopefully hugh lets me enter, I showed interested from the beginning and made references to my team. I'm also pretty certain no one will have a team like me also, as it is literally half dutch riders :D I am destined to fail anyway

@ ferminal
You weren't the only one with de maar :D

Okay... here are all the teams, in proper name, sorted alphabetically.

Some teams are over the limit - this may be an error in my data but can you please check manually and find where the error is.

I can't believe no one else picked Marc de Maar You need some picks for a laugh

I was thinking about him, he was reasonably cheap and will return to Europe next season, so he could well improve quite a lot.

damn can't believe how much cap space i left must have miscalculated when i did my adding up. Could have added the likes of pellizotti and vande velde to my team.

Oh well better luck next time:(

Argh. Seconded, Timmy's chagrin. Spent time thinking, compiling, hearing we had more than 3 weeks to tweak it, only to find after logging in 24 hours later that it's been 'closed' for hours all of a sudden.

I understand, but it's frustrating. I would be happy to enter proper names by Dec. 31st if it meant participating in this super awesome contest. It's true that now we can all see people's picks, including secret 'steals' they thought they'd had... but at the same time, the teams all seem wildly different so maybe it wouldn't be that much of an advantage to have seen them. Anyway, just saying if it opens up again, I'd be happy to participate. I'll probably follow the contest fanatically next year anyway because I love contests, cycling and numbers... but it's just always more fun to have your own horse in the race.

ETA: Kurtinsc and Ferminal and others who have spent time to help this out - nice work, guys! It's awesome to see things like this on the boards with a real community project from people who care about cycling, because it's so easy to spend most of our time bickering about favourite riders, etc. This makes me remember why I like these boards.

Have you kicked me out already?

edit. I see you havent, but surely its only a matter of time before Mellow Velo joins

Huh? No way. I often watch cycling on Dutch tv. I can't see the Aussies doing much in that department.
Btw: Why did you put Kaskechkin in your team, twice?

Mellow Velo is a hater of ACF, Cadel and the great team BMC!

I was going to say that I hope BMC have a stellar season, so that ACF can do well in this competition.
I now hope the DM give you a good clogging with their totally unbiased:rolleyes: picks.

I see I'm 12 points over. If all of us who are a whisker over have to make cuts, then KvI seems to obvious drop out for me.

First of all I want to say thanks to everyone who is participating, thanks for the many kind words and thanks to kurtinsc and Ferminal for trying to help a spreadsheet newbie out :)

I had never imagined that this would be the huge succes that it, so far, has turned out to be. Heck, I even stated that I might cancel the whole thing if there wasn't enough who wanted to participate.

Now the thread has more than 250 replies and more than 5200 views. I have recieved PM's from 33 people who wants to enter the competition and quite a few more have stated in this thread that they wanted to join also. People are discussing individual riders and the theory and mathematics behind their choices. Awesome! :)

When I first decided to start the game, I thought "well there shouldn't be too much work with this. I might be looking at 10, maybe 15, teams entering, which certainly is doable without putting too much time into it".
However after just 24 hours I could see where this was going with the many teams already registered, which is why I decided to create the "25 teams maximum" limit (which turned out to be 25+ teams maximum :p).

Now I do feel sorry for those who had planned on participating and maybe already had created a team but just didn't send it in because of the deadline of december 31, which is why I have decided that I will again allow everyone to enter the competition if I manage to figure out something smart with the spreadsheet. I will contact Ferminal and kurtinsc who hopefully will spend a little time helping me out creating something that is easily manageable and easy to update.

Shouldn't I then have published the teams already entered? Probably not. But what's already been done, I can't change. If this means that a lot of new people joining will have some fun, for me, that's definately worth it. After all, it's just a game and the more people having fun with this, the better.

Will your "secret rider" be stolen by new teams entering? Perhaps. However, chances are that getting Cobo for free or buying Stybar or Dowsett for pennies won't be the deciding factor. I do, however, urge new teams entering not to "cheat" by simply chosing the most popular riders or stealing every single good idea. Again, this is a game, and games should be fun. What fun is it to do well in a virtual manager game if you simply copy other peoples choices?

Well enough with the ethics. I will start taking a closer look at the spreadsheet to see if I myself can figure it out or otherwise I will contact Ferminal and/or kurtinsc and then they'll hopefully help me out.

I hope everyone is OK with the decision.

Edit: wait, did i send Le Mevel in the corrected PM? He was there in the original team and is missing in the spreadsheet. drat, 510 points wasted

That's a mistake by me. You did indeed send Le Mevel in the corrected PM, and he will of course be added to your team.

Just for the record, the Izagirre I picked was Gorka, not Ion.

As far as I can tell, the Izagirre noted in the spreadsheet is Gorka and not Ion. If anything is wrong, please contact me again.

1) Have you recorded all the riders original values?
2) Will there be a leaderboard throughout the year of how everyone is going?

1) No. But hopefully the new and improved spreadsheet will include a colomn showing the 2010 value along with the 2011 value. I have a few ideas in mind - it's just my spreadsheet skills that limits the possibilities :)
2) That's one thing I'd definately like to create.

It is all looking great. Massive response.
Hopefully, a few of the PC "experts" (I am not one!) will indeed lend a hand and so more of the old timers can get involved.

I would make a suggestion, although it might be difficult to implement.
Would it be possible to "cap" new selections?
i.e. Say the new "cap" limit is set at 10. Once Cobo or Stybar etc, have been picked by 10 users, they become no longer eligible for further team selections?

I have made a team, actually finished it before the team limit was implimented but decided to let others, probably more active in the forum and definitely with lots more knowledge than me have a go. If things are opened again though I will submit my team as I had it when it was initially closed. I will disappoint ACF though, he will not be the only one with Jonathan Cantwell, he was one of the first I thought of. I think I have 5 riders not selected by anyone else, probably not a good thing.
Thank you Hugo Koblet and those helping him for all the work you are doing to get this going, well done

Nope, I have 4 riders below 10. not a good idea.

This
Riders at 200 points can multiply their totals by 5. That gives you room for some of them too fail. Its like the the animal kingdom. The zebras cross knowing that a handful will get killed by the alligators. But the pack will survive.

You have 5 riders at 200. Say 2 of them fail. So you lose 100 each. But another 2 double their total, thats 200 gain each way, and the 5th triples his total. thats a 400 gain. So 400 + 200 + 200 - 100 = 700. 1700 return for a 1000 buy.
If however you choose Cav at 1200, to get the 700 point increase, Cav would probably have to win 7 stages of Tour + hold mv from first week all the way. Win MSR. win GW and win the worlds and win 5 stages each in Giro and Vuelta.

And thats a conservative score for 5 riders. Haussler can quintuple his total. That means a gain of 800. So i take my bad apples. Niemiec, Guarnieri Valls and Sella. Say Niemiec loses 300 (which he probably wont) Guarnieri loses 100, Valls loses 200 and Sella loses 100 (all pretty much worst case scenarios). The Haussler gain alone would offset the losses from my worst riders and given me 100 points extra.

So i get 1300 from my worst batch. While on the other side, my more solid riders are building up a bigger score.

That wasnt directed at you. I havent even seen your team yet ACF so i cant judge it. My point was my post included a lot of calculations making it look like im really competitive about it and the point is im not. For me the taking part is more important.

Libertine i think has got it wrong as far as Cq rankings go. I think he might have miscalculated them because he says Niemiec might get kom at Giro but kom at Giro is worth only 70 points. I dont know what hell win to get him the 460 he cost. I made the niemiec mistake too.

Anyway he has 9 riders overlaping with me.
9 of Ferminals guys overlap with mine. 10 of ingsve guys overlap with mine.
16 of Parullos 26 guys over lap with me. Thats 61% with Parullo.

So if these guys do well, i do well
Thanks acf;)
I think the top few teams will double but there will be some riders on most players teams which will have shocking seasons and will actually go backwards. A lot of people have ricco. He will probably go up but he could have a shocker, have a injury which screws up his season and then a lot of teams will lose a considerable amount. have not seen your team yet either!

Its a joke. I thought "who is the person who most antagonizes ACF" and your name flashed brightest of all.

Kashechkin 2nd time is supposed to be Marycz. I pmed Hugo with the correction soon after and hes in my list of "why i chose who i chose".

I think I spent too much time on this yesterday. This night I dreamt that Jussi Veikkanen won Omloop Het Nieuwsblad ahead of EBH. Very strange.

Haha! Yesterday, after anouncing this, I actually dreamt that I won the Ronde van Vlaanderen three years in a row! The strange thing - well I guess the whole dream was strange - was that the race eventually was decided on a course where you had to run around some tables in a class room 10 times. :D

Blanco - Libertine has told me this guy is quite good and has won the prestigious race Tour of portugal.
Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit. I'm not a Blanco fan, but he has a lot of talent that has been hidden away because of Puerto exile, and should see a good return on 300 points.

auscyclefan94 said:
The tams who I personally think will do wel are Parrulo, Libertine Seguros, ingsve & ferminal from looking at their teams.
Just for the record, I only have one classics man - who's injured - and one sprinter. Who's a second tier sprinter. For Euskaltel.

Parrulo said:
also libertine i am surprised you chose andre cardoso. if he was on a pro tour team he would be on my team hands down. but he is stuck on a portuguese continental team even tho he has some huge talent(top 15 at the worlds when it was the only time on this season and prolly carrer that he rode a distance that long) so i can't see him get much more then that he already has.
No David Blanco on Tavíra. No David Bernabéu at Barbot. I have a feeling he could get a podium at A Volta, and also Blanco got small points for races like Santarém. Cardoso will be all over the Vuelta a Asturias imo too. At 124 points, you're hardly going to LOSE much with him now that he's no longer a domestique.

The thing is, he'll still be going around picking up mountains points and competing with the top guys at Coppi e Bartali, Settimana Lombarda and Trentino. He'll score more points for just finishing the Giro and maybe picking up a top 10 or two in stages than he would riding Asturias and other minor races that Miche do. Plus he'll have the chance to ride races like Tirreno-Adriatico for the first time; he could be useful in races like País Vasco, and will be motivated to do well in the Tour de Pologne. Lampre also always ride the Volta, he could make an adequate leader there (though Lampre don't tend to do well, they tend to soft pedal most of it and give it a go in the mountains preparing for the Vuelta and Worlds) - and then he could lead the Vuelta, feasibly. I'll be surprised if I don't break even on Niemiec. I may not make much of a profit, but I'll be surprised if I don't break even.

ingsve said:
Ah, but Andre Cardoso rides for a Continental team not a Pro Continental team. That's a huge diffrence.
Yes, it is. But with the number of Spanish continental teams dwindling, the amount of .1 races in Spain that the Portuguese teams could go to may increase. And at 124 points for a guy who could win the Volta, I figured it was a risk worth taking. I wanted Hernâni Broco too, but because he did so well at the Volta and he hasn't been as consistently excellent as Andre I didn't risk it.

Parrulo said:

CC Tavíra can't be invited to the Vuelta. They can go to Asturias, Madrid, Castilla y León, Comunitat Valenciana, the Ruta del Sol, the Klasika Primavera and the GP Miguel Indurain though. If CC Tavíra get to do all of the Spanish domestic calendar in the absence of more Spanish teams, I could see him being the Niemiec of the Spanish calendar, consistently picking up good results but not stepping up a level.

I reckon I can get at least 250 points or so out of Cardoso. And that's doubling what he cost me.
