His stats are just borderline, not awful but not great. I don't think he'll be dropped. Cowan, who shut me up nicely in the warm up match, for Warner wouldn't be a bad idea. A conventional opener and an attacking one.

It's fair enough that Hughes is there with a few injuries around, but there's no way I'd have him in my full strength squad, even with moving Watson down.

I'd have Khawaja, Marsh, Clarke, Hussey and Watson, with the final spot between Warner and Ponting. If Warner is picked he'd open with Khawaja or Marsh, if it was Ponting, he'd bat 3 and the other two would open.

Hughes probably still has two or three games to prove otherwise though.

Matthew Hayden spent three years in the wilderness after initially playing 7 tests and failing to impress. After earning a recall through tireless work in first class cricket, it took him several more tests to solidify his spot.

The difference to Hughes is that Hayden went back and earned a recall, taking many seasons. Hughes on the other hand went back to first class cricket and played several awful matches, but was quickly recalled less than a year after being dropped. 11 games in and he's still showing no signs of being able to consistently perform at a level needed to open for Australia.

I think the fair answer to my question would be Geoff Marsh, whose average fell to 35.97 after 21 tests and never recovered. Completely different era though.

See post #621 ;)

Apparently Sean Marshs' back problem is worse than is being reported, may need surgery on a bulging disc?

Hughes is worth persisting with for the short term, only because he IS obviously talented, if flawed.

Disappointing to hear about Marsh's injury though, I'd like to see him and Khawaja come in at 1st and 2nd drop(either one first) with Clarke at 5 and Watson at 6. I'd also like to see Hussey and Ponting go while everyone still remembers them as great players.

Hopefully Marsh can recover fine.
42x16, Hussey's only had 3 bad matches. He was brilliant in Sri Lanka and let's not forget the Galle innings, which was as good as Clarke's at Cape Town.

Mountaineers win the Stanbic 2020 beating the Mash Eagles by 27 runs thanks to Phil Mustard's quick 50 and Nannes and Shingi Masakadza's 2-17 and 3-21.

I don't think it's either a good short-term or long-term option. Maybe medium-term if he can get a bit of a run on.

Short-term: Recent form says he's not good enough to be in the side.
Medium-term: Might get a run on and have a few good series.
Long term (if things go as they are): Will be useless as a test batsman.

Persisting with Hughes is the opposite mindset to what produced so many successful test batsmen over the last 15 years.

Hayden, Langer, Katich, Martyn, Lehman, Hussey... look at how many first class runs they made before solidifying their spot. Even prodigies like Ponting and Clarke had unenforced time out early in their careers.

Hughes was so prolific at such a young age that maybe it was expected that he would be able to cope with test cricket without any problems.

Hussey should never have played in the Ashes a year ago, but he did and made runs, and did again in Sri Lanka. Hard to get rid of him when he was your best batsman in two consecutive series especially given the form of those around him. Batting at 6 in this team is going to be a tough job whoever does it, I don't think there's anyone with an Australian passport who would actually be a great fit in there at the moment. It's not Hussey's natural position, and all the new batsmen coming in are top 3-4 players.

The FC match between Victoria and Queensland is going down to the wire, with Queensland chasing down 400 to win, and at the latest update had Queensland at 7/388 with Peter Forrest on 112* who has re-rejuvenated himself since he made the move from NSW to Queensland in the off-season.

That's incredible, QLD finish on 9/399 as the match is drawn

 Unbelievable, it would have been the most undeserved victory for Queensland though.

It's not that uncommon in Shield cricket though, a captain makes an ambitious declaration to force a result but come up on the wrong side of it. Or two declarations in this case.

You don't like to see it though as you want captains to keep taking the risk.

Forrest seems to be able to score quickly now at QLD, he was a snail at NSW.

I would say being able to chase 400 down would be a deserved victory for mine.

They took just 10 wickets in the match.

It's an understandably brave decision by a team desperate to get points. Queensland were well outplayed over 4 days and it would have been a bit of a travesty if Victoria lost. This is Queensland's first dropped points in the shield, I think.

Clearly Cricket Australia beleive in fascism after the shocking decision to sack Simon Katich for telling the truth.

Just realised that yesterday's Queensland Victoria match was a twilight match. Does anyone know how the light was and did it interfere with play?

Whatmore for Pakistan seems likely.

I didn't watch it (seeing as though it wasn't on TV) but play was extended for close to an hour as Queensland nearly chased the runs down.

They were calling it the twilight match in Grandstand and it finished at 2.30 here, so that would be possibly 7.00 (not 100% sure). Doesn't seem too different to a normal match time considering play was extended by an hour.

Yeh, it wasn't much later than normal. But it would have been fine with daylight savings and using the lights if needed.

Symonds is taking part in India's Celebrity Big Brother. Sad.

Sad because it's beyond a load of bs and he needn't waste his time there.

It has been a tough match when the score is 7/276 and that's a marked improvement over the first innings. SA seem very poor- 93 in the first dig and leading by 1 run now. Special mention to Joe Mennie who took 7 wickets for them in WA's first innings (7/96). Another NSW-man playing for SA.

On a different note- would any of you accept what Asif, Aamer and **** did if it was not an exceptional case. Reading the Vino LBL thread, there seem to be many fixing apologists. I certainly won't accept it and if proven should Vino and Kolobnev not be treated similar to the cricketers.

8/279 now.

Yeh, WA actually in the top half of the shield table after the midpoint of the season for the first time in a decade.

Comprehensively outplayed SA, but our one thunderstorm for the summer on Tuesday wiped out all of the 2nd day.

I think Hughes will have a few more tests before dropped. I would however like to see his technique markedly improved on.
Cowan and Forrest are pushing along with Maddinson.

I would like for Hussey to be just in the OD1 team. Although that would be harsh on him given how in Sri Lanka he performed ( he makes little contribution at other times ). Also if Ponting is dropped for youth Hussey should be as well.
He is also in my view Australias' best OD1 player as well.
