Yeah i've moved on to speculating that Evans really wants to win this tour itself. Just wanting yellow was too much of a stretch.

Wiggins mentioned he really wanted the victory this year actually.
Evans not so. He is just using it as preparation for le tour and to get his legs ready.
If he can get get a win or two, why not go for it?

It's usually a race that the great champions have a good go at winning at some point in their career.

Nobody is saying that either Wiggins or Evans would turn their nose up at a GC win here. The Dauphine was one of the biggest wins of Wiggins career, arguably second only to Paris-Nice. Evans would, of course, like to add yet another stage race win to his palmares.

There's quite a jump from that to thinking that either of them would be "desperate" for a few days in yellow here, though. Or that either of them would do something that they thought might jeopardise their Tour chances here. Evans, for instance, as a good descender isn't any more likely to crash out front than he would be stuck in the peloton where a significant proportion of the riders can't descend half as well.

And even if he makes it, no way will he be able to reach 100% form.

Are the broken ribs confirmed?

There are worse things to break, but as you say, if he has managed to break a rib or two it's going to effect his preparations so badly as to effectively remove him from Tour consideration.

Wiggins is a straught shooter and will say the objective is to win, but he's not as desperate as Evans in my judgment. That's why Evans will be disappointed when he loses this tour and it will be a psychological blow for the TdF.

Kash is once again a TDF podium threat! Let's hope Vino doesn't hold him back.

It's suspected though only. It might turn our there's no major injury. At least he made it to the finish and didnt abandon.

More like the stage, really. It's unlikely that the Dauphine will ever be won by a 6km breakaway on a descent that gets a whole 4s. If Evans wanted the Tour he'd have just driven hard on the front the whole way to maximise time gain with no bonuses rather than try for the stage win.

There really is not more to it. The Dauphine will be won in the TT and last stage this year.

Back to lurking for another few years.

This is getting quite funny now.......
He wouldn't bother if he loses dude. Another 2nd place in the dauphine will satisfy him.
All he cares about now is le tour and only le tour.

Poor Euskaltel!

If both Sanchez and Anton have their most important season's goals wiped out, it can't do very much for their chances of World Tour survival.

even if its minor, something that causes you to come in 25 minutes behind the peloton on a relatively flat stage, is most likely going to have some effect.

You don't think if he can't beat his main tour rival here, just a few weeks before the big one, that won't have an effect? He fires his best bullet and the guy beats him. It's bound to have an effect. This is his most important dauphine since he was up against Contador and Valverde in 2009. Evans cracked big time just a few weeks later in the tour because of that loss.

Just got back, missed the stage, sounds like an impressive effort from Cadel.

But I've got to say, it's getting like July on here already, and not in a good way.

Dlwssonic raving on about Bmc is an all season thing tho.

By Anton, you mean that Contador is doing the Vuelta?

Antón's only goal is to have a good time on the bike. I don't think that one's in jeopardy just yet.

Wow, Kashechkin hasn't done anything for years, gets a 3rd place in Dauphine and is effectively a TdF favorite? :D

No, the most important Dauphine he did was last year, because he won Le Tour a few weeks later, which was the actual target. 2007 and 2008 he went very deep in the Dauphine, which didn't help his chances of winning the Tour.

Over the years we have seen countless riders go way too deep trying to win the Dauphine or Suisse and pay for it at the Tour. Hell even Armstrong did it trying to beat Mayo in 2003. You do not have to win the Dauphine to win the Tour, and often it is inadvisable to try too hard to win what is a preparation race.
