Are you sure? Looked like he gave everything to get that yellow today. I think a stage win and holding yellow for a few days was his target for this tour. It's unlikely now that Wiggins will let go of it.

In his interview he said something along the lines of "I like to race".

That is it, don't read any more into it. He will be well behind Wiggins by the end of the Dauphine. Results wise this race is already a success for Evans and it came from a 5mins effort, much better for his Tour prep than going crazy in the TT or on Joux Plane.

not saying sky were bothered but I did see a few sky riders at the front chasing.
Maybe there was a miscommunication involved and they just panicked with such a big name GC rider attacking.

to be fair to him, he did try to get away with LLS. The peloton just would not let them go. However it was a good launching pad for his teammate cadel.

It maybe that Evans want to win this tour more than Wiggins and will take risks like today in order to achieve this. Wiggins won it last year of course, but if my memory serves me correct, Evans has not even held yellow here.

I don't think Sky care about Evans getting a few seconds, but I also don't think they were strong enough to get on the front and pull him back. That trio was riding very hard, no one was letting them go.

BMC were racing for the stage win. Neither Wiggins, who has won the Dauphine, nor Evans, who has won the Tour, are going to be motivated by the glorious impossible dream of a few days in yellow at the Dauphine.

Also a bit silly are the various comments about it being a "good sign" that some favoured rider or other made the front group of... 90!

Exactly. I think technical descent is a bit confused with the significance of this race.

then you should be thankful that you're not cheering for comets like some of us do.when cobo and kash do things like being there in the first group,that's already a win.

Exactly. I think technical descent is a bit confused with the significance of this race.

It's usually a race that the great champions have a good go at winning at some point in their career. Contador tried hard but failed a couple of years ago. Armstrong won it twice. Going further back, Indurain and Lemond won it. And Evans himself tried very hard to win this in 2009, losing to Valverde. Yeah it's not as important as a grand tour, but I get the feeling Evans really wants to tick off the box on this one, whereas Wiggins has already done it and is solely focused on the TdF. Wiggins won't be taking mad risks on a descent this close to the tour.

Kashechkin did more than cruise in with an, ahem, "select" group of 90.

As an aside, the sheer size of that group undermines some people's argument that Sky were just cooked and couldn't chase. There's no way that Wiggins' six helpers in the group were all just hanging on when there so many people still there.

Yeah i've moved on to speculating that Evans really wants to win this tour itself. Just wanting yellow was too much of a stretch.

But I've got to say, it's getting like July on here already, and not in a good way.

This is a warm up race. Evans is just trying to set a psychological edge on the rest. Wiggins is the only rider who said he came to win Dauphiné.
