ZO, People are generally lazy and also don't like to type long words/names, mainly due to cell phones and their tiny keyboards, besides nicknames make the poster look like they are close and know the rider they're talking about, even if they have never met them nor ever will (on a personal level, autographs don't count).

I hope the CdD is going to rock it this year.

Calling a rider by his nickname in a post certainly may reveal an intention of a poster to look familiar with the rider he's writing about, but it may also be due to practical reasons.
But a nickname itself should point out some characteristic of a rider. For example "Eddy Merckx" doesn't tell us anything, but "Cannibal" speaks volumes.
That's why nicknames are important.

As far as i know from some Bolivian people i met, calling them Indios is equal to them as calling black people ******s.

Not sure how it is in Colombia though, but in Bolivia that word is considered a racial slur.
+1.

Same in Colombia. Unless you are actually having a conversation about Indians. But in the general context of conversations it is considered a derogative word.

There has never been a Dauphine with less time trialing:eek:
Is that right? I just looked, and there literally hasn't been this little time trialing in the ProTour/WorldTour era, but is that really true since the start of the race in 1947?

Quintana doesn't need a nickname. Future generations of riders will be nicknamed Quintana for ripping a peloton to pieces in the mountains.

Something tells me it will be Q if he ever podiums :p

Lots of talk about this Nairo kid :D here, but I thought Unzue mentioned last week that he won't do any race before the Tour de France.

So anyone knows when he leaves Colombia? Maybe they changed his race-schedule again, let's wait and see.

As for Quintana,I hope he will go for GC at Dauphine.Still it depends on Piti,he likes this race,so he might go for the win.Imo Quintana should go 100% at least at TT and mountains.;)

we need to find a nickname for this guy,he deserves it!

Using his initials, and being a lover of Led Zeppelin:

Nairo "No Quarter" Quintana

The songs reference to inclement weather, Sky's constant nemesis, along with Quintana's icy cool demeanor under pressure will see him prevail.:)

Not right.

I think his name has a beautiful rhythmic quality to it anyway so a nickname isn't exactly needed but to agree with a previous post, sometimes a rider's exploits are such that we stumble about trying to come up with names that help give a description of their style and/or honors them in a certain way. As long as the name isn't derogatory or insulting (Pantani-Elephantino) then I don't see any harm. For instance Joaquin Rodriguez' nickname (Purito) has seemed to grow more fitting as the years have gone on, and as I've gotten to know more about him and the origins of his nickname.

Nairo El Señor Quintana

Nicknames need to be usually short and punchy. No point including his nam e in the nickname, that's missing the point :p

On Dauphine, Froome to win GC, Quintana to win at least one stage.

But I guess you can also find the opposite as the twitter discussion shows.

Nice route, but will not be watching this one tho. Hope bertie show some legs and form. Just to offer some hope for another winner than Froom later in TdF.
