I rarely visit the Clinic anymore, but Lim's comments alone about Floyd the bully had me literally laughing out loud. So many of his cya claims are just comedy gold. Some seriously funny shjt.

He makes it seem as if he was same angel coming to rescue the soul of cycling, when he is nothing but a whorre who benefited greatly from his involvement and will keep to his lies because of that company he has selling nutritional supplements.

He had quite the falling out with his ex-business partner, who was instrumental in coming up with the swill he's selling.

The complete Lim article can be found here-

http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2014/02/skratch-labs/

But the competition is just as fierce in the world of sports nutrition as it is in pro cycling—and just as messy. Two other companies have launched drinks similar to Lim’s: One is the relative giant behind Clif Bars, and the other, Osmo Nutrition, was founded by Lim’s erstwhile partner, who once upon a time helped him develop his celebrated drink-mix recipe.

There’s one thing missing from this story, however, says hydration and metabolism expert Stacy Sims: her role in it. In 2009 Sims, an adjunct research associate at Stanford University School of Medicine and an elite cyclist and triathlete, met Lim through a mutual contact at Slipstream, and he invited her to Spain to apply her science. “I was behind the scenes, mixing stuff up, getting the data, tweaking things, and he was getting feedback from the riders,” she says. After forming Lim-Sims LLC, they prepared to bring their solution to market. But as the product’s fame grew, Sims says, she was sidelined. A few months after Secret Drink Mix launched, Lim offered to buy her out. The matter was settled through lawyers, including a stipulation that Sims not disparage Lim or the company.

Sims says her frustrations with Lim are professional, not personal. (In May 2012 she launched Osmo Nutrition, which offers Active Hydration mixes—she describes them as “Secret Drink Mix 2.0″—as well as other innovations like preload and recovery drinks and different formulas for men and women.)

Lim chafes at the idea that he forced Sims out. “Ultimately, I saw business in a very different way than she did,” he says. “With respect to our parting, it was so she could have the best opportunity for herself.” He’s equally sanguine about the fact that Clif has launched its own low-carb electrolyte hydration drink mix and that other companies will likely follow. “There are lots of teams out there,” he says. “Just because we’re not on the same team doesn’t mean we all aren’t doing great things.”

Still, Lim’s competitive streak sometimes gets the better of him. In the course of Lim’s being interviewed for this story, his lawyers sent Sims a cease-and-desist letter demanding she stop making “disparaging statements” about him and Skratch Labs.

Armstrong biggest mistake was behaving like a a--hole whilst being and a--hole.

Lim has perfected being an a--hole whilst coming across as a mild mannered guy.

He literally is cycling's version of Lou Pai.

I laugh at the whole pseudo nutritional supplemental drink logic.

Although it makes for good commerce, all these drinks are based on simple physiology...make them with same components (H2O, salt and sugar) with some tasty stuff(but not Fructose). There is a wide variety of responses in people which is good for guys that try to make a buck. Its not rocket science. There can be many combos of the above that work for different people. A serious athlete needs more salt than Gatorade or G2 deliver and thats why they have Gatorade Endurance and have Packages of salt (Gatorlytes, which you cannot buy) for serious athletes who sweat a lot.

Take for example two athletes that are the same size, have the same fitness and play the same position, exercising at the same intensity with one who sweats twice as much as the other - lots of variablility in terms of getting heat to the periphery, what core temp you can handle, etc. This makes it fun, because every athlete needs individual attention.

Lim is bullying other scientists(athletes) out of their work, and then making a profit on 'his' drinks...a recurring cloak of competence or theme I guess.

Agree totally neworld..the GAtorade hype and marketing is a well known scam..
lots of companies vying for your money and pretending that you 'need' their drink or whatever for proper 'rehydration' etc…

You're right.

Again as a business model...sure. Heck if 'fitty-cent' can buy into Vitaminwater and make millions off of people paying to pee out what little vits are in them there aqueous cans, why not sell salt and water to Masters' cyclists.

Maybe the Cogger is behind the Gatorade BS too, I bet G2 makes my liver more efficient over time.

Lou Pai, great name. In the Enron books I read he retired to Hawaii with a hooker. Oh the glories.

several impressions -

* wow on the true story of his upbringing. He learned to lie and manipulate from his mom.

* George contradicts himself with the whole "Frankie teaching me how to dope" bunk. he outright said it was Max Testa who taught him to dope not Frankie. Lance wasn't after Max, though. Hence, George listened to his leader to go after Frankie. He is after all "the loyal lieutenant" of armstrong

* george has zero moral compass.

* Armstrong flicking JT's chemo treatment because a fun opportunity came up with a popular band

* Can't remember if it's in the book but lance was blowing bubbles with his bubble gum at JT's funeral.

* He wouldn't give his mom commission on the house he bought?

* beating a 10 year old kid to the finish line in his bike ride?

* juliet's biting word in describing people be it Kristin, linda, lance et. al.

* Outing Chris Carmichael for the fraud he is; Och as well to some extent.

* I didn't contact the Troll, he contacted me first

* Allen Lim portrays himself as mr. anti-doper but the fact is he chose to be up to his neck in it with floyd as well as after, no?

* and all this "they didn't have a degree" - I don't buy it. My dad is an immigrant who only had a 8th grade education and came to America with nothing. Frankie didn't dope because he didn't have a college degree and wouldn't be able to find work. Maybe for other guys but unlike other dumb jocks, Frankie's pretty smart. I'm a staunch proponent for higher education but in America the opportunity is there to make of your life what you want. Hence, the statement about doping, pro athletics and lack of college I don't buy. Frankie really likes the sport, it's his passion, hence, he wanted to work at something he likes.

There are more but that's what sticks in my mind for now

A few posters have made comments for and against Wonderboy being in direct contact with his kids...

The Canadian Broadcasting Company program Marketplace did an in depth study of sports drinks versus water. Here is their conclusion,

"A CBC Marketplace investigation found that the vast majority of Canadians don't exercise hard enough to need the colourful drinks, and an average workout does not deplete the body enough to require additional energy and electrolytes."

Funny, I was thumbing through this very book the other day in Barnes & Nobles when I bought Cycle of Lies. It must've been on display, but the irony of it was not lost on me.

There is no cure for these people. They are broken. Avoid them if you can.

I posted this on page 8 of this thread, but it's well worth repeating. The full audio is fascinating.

As far as energy goes, I think the sports drinks are a waste of money unless you're both (a) out riding for more than a few hours and (b) you have a sag wagon behind you that is catering to your every need. You can get energy better, and in more variety, from bananas, dried fruit, gels, sandwiches, powerbars, jerky etc.--and you don't have to worry about the stuff screwing with your digestion.

But as far as electrolytes go, sports drinks are beyond excellent for really long rides. A few tabs in the water bag/bottle can make drinking much more pleasant after hour four or five of the ride, and they really do seem to help avoid Bonk City. I likes me my K.

Allen Lim has nothing for the mass market. He's just trying to cater to a niche market of anorexic professional cyclists and the wannabes who imitate them.

I agree that after the long workouts > 90 minutes, a sports drink can help. I make my own for my weekly LSD runs. Dr. Wells had this to say to Marketplace,

"Wells says that while sports drinks are widely available, they’re only really helpful to a small minority of athletes. “Eighty-five per cent of Canadians don’t get enough exercise to begin with, so they don’t need sports drinks. The remaining 15 per cent that actually do exercise, you probably have one or two per cent exercising really hard, really intensely enough to really need those sports drinks. In that group, probably a small subset of them are exercising long enough to need it.”

“In the scientific community, we generally don’t recommend sport drinks for anything less than 90 minutes, if you are exercising really intensely, if you are exercising in the heat, if you are exercising for a very long period of time.”

Wells says most of us are better off with water. “An average person like you, during a workout, you need to be drinking a lot of water; that’s pretty much all your body needs. That’s what your body needs for your muscles to work really, really well. That’s what your blood needs to circulate really well.”

Lance could have saved a ton of money!

Yes sadly. A trait he's perfected.

hread,

Which is what I asked about in a separate thread, why George STILL worships/assists Wonderboy? he has to realize he comes off as disingenuous, and a huge fraud. But then again, that's why he's still loyal to that POC. Like 2 pees in a pod.
* george has zero moral compass.

This! or credibility

* Outing Chris Carmichael for the fraud he is; Och as well to some extent.

I knew i liked you for a reason;):D, Carmichaels a HHUUUGGGEEEE fraud, and as I've asked, how he and Och are still working in the sport, is a huge mystery to me.

Spot on, a troll he is.

* Allen Lim portrays himself as mr. anti-doper but the fact is he chose to be up to his neck in it with floyd as well as after, no?

Yep, like i mentioned earlier, he comes off as a huge ******bag, liar, and phoney. He knew exactly what he was doing, and who was doing what, and who he would align himself with. He think we're all stupid.

Thanks for your insight, always enjoy it.:D

According to the Secret Race, Carmichael was never a coach even way back when LA first started out, Tyler described him as a 'cheerleader'.

I have just finished reading Cycle of Lies. Before this I had read most of the books about Armstrong and doping in cycling, and the Reasoned Decision. I never liked Armstrong from the get go, not because of his suspected doping but because of his arrogant, obnoxious and bullying behaviour.

So I read Cycle of Lies with the perspective of being relatively well informed about the doping on USPS, on other teams, in the peloton generally and by specific cyclists. I understand the mob mentality to doping, omerta and the abject negligence of the UCI.

My conclusion is that rarely in the world do you come to see so clearly what a despicable human being is Lance Armstrong. I am also blown away by the lengths the people in his entourage would go to, to defend his lies, fraud and cheating. That too is despicable.

In my opinion Armstrong is not capable of redemption, because he has no redeeming qualities. In my opinion he is a pathetic psychopath, who is so deluded by the illusory script he has concocted in his mind about his unfair treatment, that he is out of touch with reality.

Armstrong's own words in the context of his never having sought out his family perhaps sums it up best, @ p. 404,

"The follow up is maybe that means I'm just extremely fu@!ed up, I don't know." (Spelling for censorship purposes)

That is the understatement of the century. His friend John Korioth was bang on when he stated to Lance, @ p. 394

"Yep, you are a really good liar, but you're horrible at telling the truth"
