Oh man... that sucks. I get that people flouting rules is obnoxious and, well, against the rules, but a permanent ban seems a little harsh. If his dominant characteristic was trolling and picking fights, I would understand more why he shouldn't be someone who is here, but he was quite passionate about cycling, as much as I disliked some of his posts and attitude. I certainly appreciated his ability to dig out details about hard-to-find race results, or forgotten riders that were retiring.

And it goes without saying that his posts were hilarious.

The fact remains however that he responded to a short ban for some very offensive behavior by triggering one of the most serious (and well known) offences on this site.

We cannot simply allow him to continue unaffected because he sometimes posts some good stuff. He has to take a very long term if not permanent ban for this act, just as others have before him.

Haha yes very good The Hitch

Yeah his posts were funny, referring to Lucybears as Juicy Lucy kind of amusing but not sure its the right thing to do!..

That's a piti (sic).

Daotec was one of the most active on the cyclocross section, which is not a very active section and the only one on which I'm active at this time of the year. Well actually he only brought up results or news and never commented - which is why I'm surprised he could insult anybody since I've hardly read any of his posts outside the cyclocross section - but yet he was active.

I hope his ban can be commuted to a temp ban.

I think all the mods in this thread have made clear that we are well aware of the contribution he made to the site (the vast majority positive, some negative), and we all regret that we were left with no other option than to invoke the penalty for the worst offence we have in the book, bypassing a suspension.

We didn't like having to give him a week, we certainly didn't like to give him the indefinite ban. Both were triggered by his own behaviour.

We are also flagging quite clearly here, that because of his vast positive services to the forum, the chances are very good that we would welcome his return at some point in the future

a) if he understands that he too needs to abide by the rules here
b) after some serious time in the sin-bin since he has broken the firmest rule of them all
c) if he doesn't create yet another sock-puppet to get round this ban

I am emphasising that last one before we get into even deeper water than we already are. None of us wants that.

There is a contact us link at the bottom of the page if he wants to communicate with us about this. If he feels more comfortable to do that in Dutch, that is an option too.

Well yeah, its not much fun being insulted, ridiculed or whatever but I think most of us can cope. Daotec got a lot of stick himself also remember..

Some of his condescending posts go over my head because there is some decent input usually, I just see the funny side. So yes, getting him back in a few weeks might be a good idea.

Again, the insulting resulted in the temporary suspension of only a week. But within a few hours he already came back online with another account flaunting the fact that this was his other account and that the Daotec account was banned. If he had only insulted someone he would have been back in a week. But because he used a sockpuppet to post, this has for now been changed to a indefinite suspension, which might be revised some time in the future, but even if this will be the case he will keep a very lenghty suspension because of the creation of another account, a few weeks will probably be shorter than what we have in mind.

Look, I think all the moderators are not happy with the situation and would rather have seen, firstly not seen him being that insulting that he needed a weeks suspension and especially not that we were forced to later increase this suspension because he used a sockpuppet, we'd rather have him on the forum as a constructive and positive poster, but his actions ensured that we felt that we had no other option. He knew, or at least should have know, like all the other members, that using a sockpuppet to post if you are banned ensures that we are forced to take reactionary measures

Perhaps in his case a plea could be made for a more lenient sentance on the basis of insanity?

And what type of message would that sent to others who are banned?

lol

but to be fair to daotec, one other top poster was given a lenient ban (or rather a pardon) for the crime of sockpupetting and i think we would all agree that this forum is a lot better with TSF than it would be without it.

Which is partly the reason Im in favour of his perma-ban being a long-but-not-finite-ban. Would be hippocritical of me to say anything else.

however.. there are 3 kinds of sockpuppet
1) the sockpuppet that once banned comes back and causes trouble
2) the sockpuppet that comes back and posts as if nothing has happened
3) the sockpuppet that comes and posts in a mod thread to raise concerns.

Each one for me has a varying level of seriousness. One is disruptive, one is cheeky, and one is annoyed.

That said, doesnt matter if you kill someone with a hammer, a knife, or the rope. You still killed someone.

I would say as well the rules on sockpuppets have become much clearer over the last 6 months. If i was suspended now I would not create a sockpuppet. (i would kick off at laura on twitter instead ;))

Wow, harsh.

Several babies have been thrown out with this bathwater.

DAOTEC may have been odd in the extreme, but he gave us access to a constant stream of lesser cycling news, feeds and trivia, that we would otherwise have missed.

I think this would be one appeal that CAS might well uphold.

free daotec e

Sorry, couldn´t resist.

Plus I do support the un´permanenting of his permanent ban. He was great for the most obscure posts and things I would never had known or bothered learning had it not been for him!

Plus we get the occasional "daotec won the internets" comment that are good for a chuckle...

Now, with the aid of google translate, DAOTEC can be replaced.

Tbh he wouldn't have bothered me if he wasn't so self-righteous about things that were rumour being posted as fact before they were announced, and if he didn't go back and draw attention to those times he'd been first to something, as if it validated him. He would spew up every bit of news he found from trawling a lot of sources, so it's no wonder he was first of us a lot of the time. And I'm impressed that Susan in particular put up with him, as he'd be jostling her when his news was right, moan when she asked him not to present rumour as fact (or at least provide a source for the rumour that he was presenting as fact) and sarcastically use endearing terms. I could never be a mod because I would have lost my temper and temp-banned him or deleted his posts out of spite in her position.

DAOTEC was great to have around in terms of presenting those rumours and doing the work of trawling the sites all over for things on the rumour mill. But he needed to learn a thing or two about playing well with others.

The chances that those 2 nicks are not owned by the same person are equal to being involved in 2 unrelated plane crashes on the same day.

I wonder what forum this is, and whether his Dutch spelling and grammar is as atrocious as his English was at times (now, I don't claim to be perfect, I make my fair share of mistakes, but most of what I write is understandable, or at least I hope so :p)
