I think Vino also gave Cancellara a nice bag of money.
Cancellara could only figure out one way to lose this race and that was a crash.

That's a lot of money. His team must have been going to the team car constantly.

Conspiracy theories are such a bore. Vino won. Uran made a stupid mistake (seriously, how often would Uran be in a position like that?)

Out of interest, does Uran speak good english? I'm pretty sure that i've read somewhere during the giro that haneao and uran don't speak english so how could vino and uran even have discussed a bribe!!

Uran has a good enough kick but he really mucked up today.

Uran is no sprinter, I think he thought he would catch Vino out and force Vino to lead him out. Vino read the move, Uran moved too far over and lost too much speed, and it was over from there. Vino is generally recognised as probably being a better breakaway man, better on the flat and quite explosive, Uran has a fairly short history, mainly as a climber.

I don't think that there was a bribe, but "500,000 euros" doesn't need translating.

Vino's generosity has no language barrier. ;)

Spanish probably, if it really happened.

This.

But with the info currently at hand, I find no. 2 to be slightly more likely.

Or incredibly naive...
I can easily imagine situation where Vino, faking panic, asks 'Where are they, where are they', and Rigoberto turns back to check where are they really.
For free, of course :D

Haha, it's a nice picture, but Urán being happy isn't really proof of much :D. Silver is a fantastic result for him. Was it Eric Dekker who crossed the line 2nd with his arms in the air in '92 because he was so glad just to get a medal?

What an idiotic vote. Author, who the hell are you to doubt his talent?
"it was too obvious" - are you serious? You should've learned about his career a bit more before starting this thread. HE IS A LEGEND, A TRUE MAN OF HONOR AND THE GREATEST CHAMPION. Not everyone has guts that he has. And thanks GOD, Vino has immune to the people like you, while you are barking here, he goes forward. By doing so, he gives enormous willingness to people, who can recognize true heart of champion, to move ahead along with him. Vino just proved that he is a man with steel character.

There is zero proof that Vino bought anything, and until any proof of buying the win emerges (which I doubt it ever will), this is all conspiracy and hearsay. Uran made a mistake Vino took advantage of that mistake and won.
Besides winning a olympic medal is something a rider only gets a chance at every 4 years, where a race like LBL takes place every year on the same course. And who know if the next olympic race would be a course that suits Uran. Winning gold in the olympics is once in a lifetime, I doubt any cyclist would take some money over olympic gold.

Maybe Vino has some Dirt on Uran???

Along the lines of the OP speculation or cynicism ...maybe Phinney should have had mom and dad wire transfer

It was an epic brainfart by Uran...looking over his left shoulder to see if the chasers were close when he knew Vino was on his right shoulder. And beyond that, it was very odd for Rigoberto to then drift toward the left barricade, when pretty much any level racer would drift right to use the barricade to his advantage.

concur, a world of emotions going through ones head in an Olympic event along with the effort might have taken him out of his game mentally. sometimes it just takes one missed step

Uran:
“No, I didn’t lose my concentration. We’d done the last 10km at full speed,” Uran insisted. ”I looked to my right and suddenly Alexander took off. I didn’t have anything left for a sprint. It was a very long day.”

I don't buy it. If you go back and look at the video of when Vino attacked, Uran lost concentration on Vino and that's when Vino attacked. It was when Uran looked to his left, to see if the chase group was a threat. Seems obvious he lost focus, he was probably exhausted. I can understand why people think he was paid, it was a major screw-up. But a silver is great for Uran and his country. One thing I do know for sure is that Vino was focused like a laser on victory.

surely if uran ends up one on one with vino he knows he can't win? uran is a great rider but he's a pure climber, vino has a sprint in him.

i thought he was looking back to protect his silver.

I am going to go with "Other/Vino"

Beautifully played sir :)

I think if I was a rider being bribed for a win I'd most definitely go "Hmmmm... I wonder just how silly I can make this look?". Makes perfect sense - or not...

No it would not.

Im assuming you are thinking of Andres Escobar, but Andres went into a dangerous area of Medellin back when it was far more dangerous than now, on his own into a bar. Its not like every delinquent in Colombia had a contract out on him the second he scored the very unfortunate own goal.

Colombia has a history of rural violence and in the 80's - 90's increasing urban but its not like they are going to randomly hunt down a cyclist over some stuff like that.

One must be a complete moron to think someone could sell the most glorious moment of his life for money. As I suspected, the percentage of trisomics in this forum is highly underrated, being an outstanding 31% as of now.

The writing was on the wall. I was confident that Vino was going to win. Colombians have never been known for their great sprinting. As for Vino, his constant refusals to discuss the past are eloquent but I have nothing against his current win. He gets tested. Nothing found, move on. He is also an expert at reading a race and knowing when to react.

Also that shooting was linked(though never proven) to a betting syndicate taking revenge. There's no big money involved in cycling bets and practically no one would have bet on Uran anyway.
