To be fair, EBH has won stages when Greipel went missing in races like the Tour de Pologne, but the Giro stage he won in 2009 was the only GT stage he won with Columbia, and not only was Greipel not in that race but it was from a six man breakaway.

Didn't this year's Giro try that. I don't think it was a success.

Ignoring the GC crashes (and I'm British), the first week of the Tour has been very good, I think.

It was still better than the 2004 Giro, which was full of flat stages. This year's Giro suffered from 2 things:
1) MTF fever. You can have a difficult parcours and you can have lots of MTFs. I love mountain stages. But with Zoncolán, Gardeccia, Sestrières, Etna, wasn't it a bit overkill to throw in the pretty pointless ones like Macugnaga and Nevegal as well?
2) in week 1 you had two brilliantly designed stages for opening up early GC gaps and providing good racing - stages 3 and 5. Both were better on paper than anything the Tour has until the end of week 2 (it still feels like a week until the Tour even starts). At any other time we'd have been praising stage 3 and what an exciting finish it was. But racing ceased to be important that day and it took several days for us and the péloton to get back to grips with it.

The Tour has been little more than a test of staying upright so far. The parcours has created a handful of seconds, otherwise everyone's still on their TTT times. Everything else has come from crashes.

Hell no. He beat him once. Hutarovich beat him once last Vuelta, but he's sure as hell not at the same level.

petacchi couldn't have been placed better while greipel was placed like sh**

That's more Greipel's fault than anything, the number of times he gets a bit of help and gets dropped off in a great position only to lose the wheel. Can't remember which HTC leadout man it was who said he was sick of having to go back and bring Greipel back up yet again as he just cannot hold a wheel.

All credit to him though, he beat Cavendish head to head and it's not so many sprinters get to do that. Don't know how long he'll have to wait to do it agin, though. I think Cavendish will want to get revenge for that pretty fast.

If he does it too often German Eurosport will run out of commentators. I think that they've died from the excitement of the finish today.

This Cavendish was on legendary super sayain form. In the Vuelta he sucked hard. Never even dominated the sprints, even when he did win.

cavendish is clearly 100% topshape unlike the vuelta imo. greipel beat him on class today and the sprint he was 3rd in he was also faster than cavendish but badly placed

Great win for Greipel, proves he has the speed to beat Cavendish, albeit with a favourable course.

It'll be interesting to see how he does tomorrow when there will be some serious competition for Cav's wheel. If Greipel does get it he will have a great chance of winning again but I expect his positioning to let him down.

I hope not a single team helps HTC out tomorrow. But enough idiotic teams that will do it regardless... Perhaps they should try for a breakaway with everyone in it except the HTC team :p

I have to say, that taking a bigger picture view, that is a good result for sprinting.

Now Cav will have to get even faster :D

Very good ride from Greipel.

He is a very good sprinter a little below Cav but right up there with Peta and Farrar in the next level.

Yes it is. And in the second stage Cav won, I dare say Greipel was faster as well.
No it isn't. The point is the tally is not even close, and it favours Cavendish.

The point is Cav never allowed Greipel to ride big races because Cav said Greipel can only win **** small races

The thing is, people were saying Greipel wasn't a good sprinter at all and that a lot of people were better. Well, they've been proven wrong with his third and first place now :)

How many currently active sprinters can say they won 7 GT stages, won stages in all GTs and won a point clasification in a GT? ;)

Not a lot.

I'm talking about this year, honey. Even this Tour is enough to make my point.

This year, Greipel has failed time and time again to show he's at the level of Cavendish. That's why we have threads like this.

Five - Cavendish, Petacchi, Greipel, Bennati and Hushovd. It's not as unsual as you think.

In addition Denis Menchov has also done it, Boonen and Freire only fail because they've never done the Giro and McEwen never quite won a Vuelta stage (a few 2nds)

It wasn't Cav that didn't allow it; his team wanted their best at the biggest races. You also, like everyone else, took the quote out of context.

How many currently active sprinters can say they won 20+ stages in all three GTs, a points classification, a Monument, and a track world championship?
