Doping in other sports?

He's back, baby! :)

After serving a four-year doping ban and missing Olympic trials for the Paris Games, Chinese swimmer Sun Yang has said he hopes to return to competition soon and "bravely" stand on the starting blocks.

Sun's ban finished on Monday, paving the way for a return to the pool for the 32-year-old triple Olympic champion and 1,500 metres freestyle world record holder.

Sun was initially suspended for eight years in 2020 for a dope test violation in 2018 in which he and members of his entourage smashed vials containing blood samples. The ban was reduced to four years and three months on appeal.

"Four years ago I’ve made this decision already - that I wanted to carry on," Sun said.

The 11-times world champion said he had told his team and his mum that they must support him, despite them worrying about his mental health as he trained alone.
...
Though Sun is clear to resume competition, he may have little chance of swimming for China again. Chinese athletes who receive doping suspensions longer than a year are banned from national teams, according to the country's anti-doping rules.

It was also his second doping ban, after he served a three-month suspension in 2014 for taking trimetazidine, a prohibited substance which he said he took to treat a heart condition.

Olympic champion in pole vaulting from 2016 got suspended until next year. He also got bronze in Tokyo. LINK
From the article:
“anti-doping tribunal judges accepted by a 2-1 verdict he was not at significant fault, the AIU said.”
It’s odd (to me) that there’s not more of an onus on athletes (or their lawyers) to provide tangible evidence for their claims. Perhaps in this case they showed the high likelihood of contamination in Brasilan supplements. I n which case the shorter ban is simply for nativity or stupidity.
If these were legal proceedings, the prosecuter (in this case the anti-doping entity) would not simply listen to the defendant’s explanations and let the judge decide.
The way the supplement contamination explanation gets handled by these tribunals would be like an assault case in which there is tangible evidence (bruises on victim) that the victim says are from the defendant. But the judge drops the charges—not because the accused’s attorneys provided direct evidence they didn’t do it— but rather because the attorneys argued it was a very high crime area and provided recent examples of other people getting punched.

Braz was warned ... should be banned for being dumb!
https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/ot...o-braz-handed-16-month-doping-ban/ar-BB1nfnDv
A disciplinary tribunal noted that Braz, who was provisionally suspended on July 28 last year, had been “personally informed of the high risk” that the supplements he took would be contaminated with prohibited substances, but nevertheless “ignored this risk.”

The majority of the panel ruled that the 30-year-old “should have been more cautious in his trust of his medical team” but ultimately acted “with No Significant Fault or Negligence.”

In a press release, AIU head Brett Clothier said: “Athletes from Brazil, including Mr Braz, have been specifically educated about the dangers surrounding the use of supplements from compound pharmacies in Brazil.

“This has occurred via AIU online forums and AIU athlete advisory notices. In the light of these very clear warnings, it is disappointing to be dealing with such a case.”

In the same press release, the AIU said that it will consider appealing the 16-month ban.

“After two days of hearings in London, the athlete’s defense arguments prevailed, proving that Thiago Braz was actually a victim of supplement contamination (an unintentional violation with no significant fault),” said Braz’s lawyer Marcelo Franklin.

(page 12 of above document) AIU's own expert Prof Saugy says that the figures don't add up as the amount found in Braz's urine was 1,500 to 2,000 times more then should have been, given the amount of supplements taken. Hmm.

As bad as cycling can be when it comes to doping, seeing how other sports deal with it can be very eye-opening. And we're not even talking about major league pro sports in North America like football, baseball, hockey ...
Nfl is funny i think 99% are on steroids, i remember when lebron join miami and in offseason he add something like 10-15 pounds in muscles. Hillarious stuff

This is an interesting read about Ledecky, for forum purposes when asked directly about Chinese doping and coverups, she equivocates with the old "we just want answers."

“Well, I mean, we need answers,” she said. “Yeah. I think we all feel really discouraged with the leadership here and just the way the global system has addressed this issue.”

She added: “It’s not because I need a medal or I want the gold medal. We are very proud of our silver medal relay that outperformed our expectations. We had great splits and we came together as a team.”

Katie Ledecky, the greatest swimmer of the current generation, can't even bring herself to publicly say "doping" or "PEDs" or whatever. I think we all probably know why.

I mean, seriously, what "answers" could she possibly need?

Grrr...

Baseballer & Simpsons actor Darryl Strawberry is in the news again - his number for the Mets is being retired. He was banned twice in the 90's for doing cocaine. ( a few months & a year respectfully)

I feel sad for the starts like Ulrich/Pantani/Strawberry etc who got tangled up in recreational drug addiction and I make a clear distinction between that and doping (of course the two are often, but not always, linked). I have a lot of sympathy for addictions, less so for PED users.

No talk about the crazy surge of Italy in track and field?
Likely does merit discussion, though with it being an Olympic season and many of these athletes unlikely to win any Olympic medals, a fair few (i.e. not the likes of Tamberi or Jacobs) are just peaking here because they can win something on home soil while a lot of the best athletes are either not competing or are not in form because they're targeting Paris. At the same time, they've unearthed a huge number of athletes in a very short period of time who are overperforming massively and yes, there are good reasons to be wary of it.

That said though, there is a specific thread for T&F doping here where this would be better discussed.

Tbf, many other nations peak for the Olympics instead of the EC in Italy, but they have been crazy since the last Olympics.

Kinda funny how Italy is really good in all the other most infamous sports that take place at the Summer Olympics. Track and Field resurrection, Swimming (ok, they have always been a powerhouse in this one) and the top European nation in freaking Weightlifting.

They really should share some of the good stuff with our cyclists an XC skiers...

i think a hilarious possible outcome of the Enhanced completions is that their times might not be much better than current pros in T&F and whatever other events, thus revealing the level of doping going on in the “clean” sports.
In the past there were claims on their website without any proof that someone had beaten Bolt's 100m world record. But by now that post has completely disappeared :D

Tbh, I still think this Enhanced Games is some kind of psyop. Where super shady oligarchs like Peter Thiel appear, nothing good comes of it and that business is certainly not what it claims to be.

Honestly, there’s few disciplines I can think of that I’d expect to see any changes at all, other than maybe some weird stuff like 50 year olds putting up huge weightlifting numbers, and maybe some of the women’s events. At first the whole thing seemed silly but with how they’re trying to frame it as some equality thing now you have to wonder if it’ll actually catch on once people see there’s no difference in performance.

What's shady about promoting transhumanism?
