A government report refers to doping being rife in Kenyan sport. Mentions rugby, athletics, and football.

http://bigstory.ap.org/article/e6bd353979ac412995101902ef93a7f7/report-finds-doping-problems-across-kenyan-sport

This article points out a terribly frustrating reality. On this board, we can talk about the nuances of clean vs. cleaner, the impact of ABP, or that some athletes are at least backing out of the game.

In athletics though, the stage is not even set to have those discussions. There is no playbill. With doping as available as it is (not just in kenya), in a hugely decentralized sport, it is incredible that people still believe what happens in competition as something genuine.

No less than 3 of the women who ran the 1500 meters finals at the 2012 Olympic games have been snared by the biological passport.

First down was the winner, Aslı Çakır Alptekin* of Turkey. Then this summer ninth placed Ekaterina Kostetskaya of Russia turned up on IAAF's list of sanctioned athletes. And last month, number seven, Natallia Kareiva of Belarus, had her sanction announced.

While only male riders have been banned in bio passport cases in cycling, there is a majority of women in bio passport cases in athletics. 22 women versus 12 men.

*Çakır Alptekin was cleared by the Turks, but IAAF soon after said they would take the case to CAS, and suspended her provisionally. This was in February. After that there hasn't been any news.

if this really was cheating your fellow competitor would not we have more than just the english marathon runner paula radcliffe protesting when radcliffe protests were nothing more than a Sysmex machine pls bust IbanMayo Hein, that a legit anti doping protest.

Paula aint a fraud for doping, she a fraud for passing herself off as clean /grammar

It's speculation, but I'm guessing this discrepancy is just a gap in funding for men's and women's events. Men get the best coaches, doctors and agents who have been in the sport longer. On the other hand, on the running track, Turkish men are not world beaters, neither are Russian men. So maybe the women's programs get tons of funding to play Frankenstein with their athletes and not the men. I'm not sure...

Yes, there are quite a few Russian female middle distance runners among the bio passport cases in athletics, and no Russian male middle distance runners. The five Russian men on the list are one marathon runner and four race walkers. The coach Viktor Chegin had a race walking miracle going in Saransk, pumping out champions and record breakers. Now it is pumping out doping cases; bio passport, EPO, Fenoterol, Carphedon and GW501516.

Why are there so many Russians on the list?
1. There are lots of doping in Russia, and some of it is too unsophisticated.
2. RUSADA has a bio passport program, they are testing to catch dopers and they are opening cases.
3. Most other countries, including those who are dominating mens middle and long distance running, doesn't have bio passport programs, and IAAF's program isn't good enough to catch dopers from those countries.

My post was less about Russia and more about the global fact that more women get caught on ABP.

So, Renato Canova in a thread on LEtsrun says that there are no OOC blood tests in Kenya.

Canove said:
2. Many continue to say there are no test out of competition in Kenya and Ethiopia. About Kenya, I explained several times there are no LESS THAN 10 TESTS OUT OF COMPETITION EVERY WEEK, and all the athletes in whereabout are tested, in Kenya and out of competition, MORE TIMES THAN GALEN RUPP (who was the most tested athlete in US). It's more exact to explain that in Kenya THERE ARE NO BLOOD TESTS, only urine tests. But I want to ask you : HOW MANY BLOOD TESTS OUT OF COMPETITION THERE ARE IN US AND IN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES ?

Read more: http://www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?thread=6074356&page=1#ixzz3H4IAOncs

I have no idea about the validity of his 10 OOC urine tests per week claim, but that is peanuts when there is no OOC blood testing. The ABP needs OOC numbers to be effective, and Kenya is supplying none.

The UFC gave Cung Le a "get out of jail free" card.

...Following the announcement of Le’s suspension, UFC officials have been provided with medical advice regarding the elevated total HGH present in Le’s system. In accordance with such medical advice, UFC has determined that Le’s elevated total HGH by itself does not prove that he took performance-enhancing drugs before the August 23rd bout. As a result, UFC has informed Le that his suspension is rescinded.

Le had requested an appeal of his suspension, and was entitled to arbitrate the drug test results and suspension. However, based on the lack of conclusive laboratory results, UFC officials deemed it appropriate to immediately rescind the suspension without the need for further proceedings....

Le is all humped over this, and for good reason. The UFC's response was just as incompetent as was the Hong Kong lab's interpretation.

I know.

Agree, taking this into account and a Tahiti player getting busted in the Confederations Cup last year, it's obvious to say it's going on in the higher echelons of the game.

Drugs in sport: Rugby's governing bodies keen to discourage doping

IRB using a doper currently serving a ban (Sam Chalmers) in a video to discuss the pressure on the younger players to bulk up by any means necessary.

Not sure how I feel about this, but its certainly a common tactic. Especially given the fact that Steroid gains (and its mainly steroids) can persists long after a 2 year ban.

Also interesting for the UK athletes currently serving a ban summary

Rugby union - 13
Rugby league - 5
Weightlifting - 5
Professional boxing - 5
Athletics - 4
Cycling - 2

NSAC has suspended UFC fighter Robert Drysdale for a year for TWO abnormal T/E ratios (both ~19:1; NSAC's limit is 4:1), one OOC and the other after The Ultimate Fighter 19 finale, which he won. He told the commission he had been on TRT but got off the program two months before the fight. Also fined him $16,000 USD (1/3 of his winner's purse) and changed the fight decision to a No Contest.

If you aren't familiar with The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), it's a reality TV show -cum- feeder series for the UFC. Unsigned prospects live together and train together under the tutelage of established UFC fighters (opposing coaches often as not have a grudge against each other). There's a single elimination round-robin fight tournament format, which culminates with the final two surviving fighters facing each other in a UFC PPV event, and with the winner receiving a contract with the UFC.

The reason I mention all that is that between all the PEDs positives and injured stars, this has been a very bumpy year for the UFC. And now here's their newly-crowned Ultimate Fighter getting popped for the very fight in which he claimed the title. So it'll be interesting to see how the management responds, particularly with they're newfound anti-PEDs crusade.

Athletics Kenya has confirmed that Jeptoo tested positive for EPO in an ooc test taken in Kenya in September. The B-sample hasn't been tested yet. She was to receive $ 500.000 as winner of the 2013-14 World Marathon Majors series on Sunday, but the ceremony has been postponed.

https://my.news.yahoo.com/top-kenyan-marathon-star-jeptoo-tests-positive-epo-163609399--spt.html

It’s not uncommon for a runner to improve rapidly in the marathon, but it is for someone like Jeptoo, who turned to the marathon at age 21. Now, 10 years later, Jeptoo is finishing a year in which she broke the Boston course record by 1:46. Her recent improvement, ascending to the world’s dominant figure in the marathon after several years of being a good-but-not great marathoner, does not prove that she was doping, but it doesn’t exactly refute the claim either.

Did she just become fully dedicated after becoming a mother? Or was she illegally doing things to help her run faster?

Jeptoo is coached by Italian Claudio Berardelli, who also coaches, among others, defending NYC champ Priscah Jeptoo, 2014 London Marathon runner-up Stanley Biwott, and 800 meter world champions Eunice Sum and Janeth Jepkosgei. Berardelli also was the coach of Kenyan half-marathon ace, Matthew Kisorio, who tested positive for a steroid in 2012, and later admitted to German journalists he was encouraged to dope by his doctor.
