The top two retain their positions, but asdfgh101 replaces Froome19 on the podium. Del1962 and Florecita have dropped out of the top ten, yielding their places to Hugo Koblet and BlackBandit222.

So, how will l'Avenir shake things up?

This time, the update really is to the end of the month. However, as the last one was to the 10th of August, it is a short term update. I had expected it to be rather more substantial though, due to the Tour de l'Avenir. None of the top 5 overall there were selected, so either us, or the race, has failed to identify the stars of the next couple of years.

Top scorers over these 3 weeks:
ALAPHILIPPE Julian 196 35 teams (5th in Plouay, 3rd in London, 4th + stage in Tour de l'Ain)
LAMPAERT Yves 99 3 teams ( mainly from Arnhem - Veenendaal Classic)
DILLIER Silvan 78 7 teams (mainly top 10 in Vattenfalls)

I think I can lay claim to the first major fail of the game: my unique pick Ignazio Moser ("Look at that surname, he will surely turn out to be a great"), far from emerging, has retired to make wine.

I remember reading 2 years ago an article that was kind of like 'just wait, he's even better than Moreno, his cousin!' And, well, based on how this year has gone, that may be true, as at least Ignazio has quit before he keeps failing expectations.

it might be too soon to ask but have you decided yet if you give this game another run next year?
i'm one of those armchair cyclists who only used to follow the Tour de France and somewhat the Giro d'Italia, but I really enjoy following my emerging riders in the result sheets.

I second that. Wold be great to have an emerging rider game starting each year.

Yeah, this game is fun to follow in its formation, but I really particularly love the long game aspect of it, that the real predictive value is how guys do over the course of three years. I think I mentioned this many months ago, but it would be cool as these riders improve and get more results, if maybe the second year we get updates every 2 weeks and then every week for the final year (although that may be asking too much).

At the same time, one aspect of the long nature of the game is if your talents don't turn out, there is little interest. So, having rolling 3-year games happening every year gives people a chance to start fresh with a new batch of riders every year.

Either way, if its too much work, maybe ask around here for some help, I would definitely be on board if there's anything you need help with, especially in terms of setup. Also, if its a matter of choosing between this and the 'career in decline' game, I'd vote this. That game was fun, but seemed like too much work on your end, and was kind of complicated. Don't get me wrong, if that game was available to me I'd participate, I'm just more invested in this one.

Thanks for the votes of confidence in the game. I don't see it being too tricky to set up a yearly version of it, and I might look for others to take on the updates, so that they can increase frequency if they wish, can add more prose than I might manage in some weeks/months (esp during classics season and GTs), and it may be clearer for readers to identify which edition of the game they are reading about.

September update (and a bit more: to 5th October)
Nearly the end of the first year, though all these guys will be expected to score better in the next two years.

No changes in the top three, but Hugo Koblet had the joint biggest rise of the month (up 4 places) to reach 5th, and Karaev is the only new entry into the top 10.

Not many of our selected riders scored points in October: only 7 of them hit double figures for the month. But one man leads the months scores by a huge margin:

BONIFAZIO Niccolo 319 4 teams
FORMOLO Davide 99 18 teams
JANS Roy 92 1 team
VALGREN ANDERSEN Michael 67 13 teams
RUFFONI Nicola 36 1 team
EWAN Caleb 29 44 teams
GAIMON Phillip 10 3 teams

It is not difficult, therefore, to spot which teams chose the multi-stage winner and GC runner up in Hainan in the monthly scores:

Those 4 Bonifazio teams all rise 7 or 8 places, but there are still none in the top 20. Ludwigzgz extends his lead still further, Hugo Koblet moves up 2 places to the virtual podium, and Froome19 has a similar rise to fifth. Rote Lanterne slips from third to sixth to allow this, while Commodoro and Hilltop Finisher nudge GPBlanco and asdfgh101 out of the top ten.

Apologies to Al Pacino, who has been systematically deprived of points throughout the season as CQ changed Beltran's first name from 'Eduard to 'Edward'. The additional 84 points, now added, raise him from 26th to the dizzy heights of 25th.

somehow i missed the september update ... bummer that i miss out the podium and the top 5 this year but i enjoyed the game very much so far and i did far better than i expected. i suppose some of the riders that had a very good to exceptional year 2014 will score less in 2015 and some others will rise. can't wait for the new season to start.

There are several legitimate picks that none of us went for that have had a good first year of the game (although they might, of course, fade in the next two years)

All of these have scored more than at least some of the top 20 that we did pick:
GRADEK Kamil 372
DAVIDENOK Ilya 372 (Maybe not much chance of him adding in the next couple of years, or even retaining many of these points)
DEMOITIE Antoine 284
GROSU Eduard-Michael 266
CONTI Valerio 262
PARRINELLO Antonino Casimiro 257
TULIK Angelo 250
FEDI Andrea 250
TVETCOV Serghei 247
THEUNS Edward 227
CANOLA Marco 221
CARTHY Hugh 219
BERNAS Pawel 217
JARRIER Benoît 215
BENOOT Tiesj 214
ZANOTTI Marco 211

Obviously, with more than 200 this year, the lifetime total for these guys has passed 200, so having missed them for this edition of the game, you can't select them for the 2015-17 version either.

Will you be kicking yourself for missing these in two year's time?

Alright! Firmly set up in 2nd place, a third of the way through. I'll be interested to see how this progresses next year - I think the differences will really come to light in year 2 and year 3. For every rider that impressed in year 1 like Formolo or Adam Yates, there can be a rider lurking for year 2 and 3 just waiting to bust out as a superstar but needing a year of seasoning. Glad to hear this is going to happen with a class of 2015 as well.

i followed gross and theuns and hoped i could pick them for next years game. also one other rider who exceeded the overall 200 points limit and will hopefully have more than 3 good years.

congrats to Ludwigzgz for the first year jersey, you and Skidmark are in another league.

Just to round off the first year of the game, there have been a handful of points scored since the last update:

KOLAHDOUZ HAGH Amir got 20 points at the Tour of Fuzhou for Geraint Too Fast and Fauniera;
BARBERO CUESTA Carlos got 2 points when Luca Benedetti's results were removed from Qinghai Lake for Ludwigzgz and Karaev;
POMOSHNIKOV Sergei got 1 point when Patrick Sinkewitz' results were removed from Trofeo Laigueglia for Leadbelly

but none of these changed the rankings.
