Mas is the new Rodney Dangerfield. No respect. From the Tirreno preview part of the front page article on “who’s racing where.”

The climbers who are most likely to put the boots to Van Aert are Filippo Ganna (probably not a joke) for Geraint Thomas, Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious), Jai Hindley and Aleksandr Vlasov (Bora-Hansgrohe), Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) and Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates).

So how many of these climbers are more likely to podium at Tirreno than Mas?

Well, what to say about Movistar?

Mas DNF on stage one. Pedrero out of GC battle. Let Verona ride the Giro instead of the Tour, which would‘ve been tailormade for him.

And their most „classy“ act:

Lazkano (born in the Basque town where tomorrow’s stage will start!) is not allowed to ride this 2023 Tour. Despite he:
- is in great shape,
- is from Vitoria-Gasteiz,
- became Spanish Champion (ITT, afaik),
- won them (Movistar) a great 2nd rank at Dwars door Vlaanderen, of 2023… Lazkano would have deserved to be allowed to ride this Tour. Movistar should have added him - most of all, to reward Lazkano‘s great season so far.

Very sad, all that… :(

Obviously, losing Mas is a disaster. None of the rest is important or relevant to Movistar's Tour. I mean, Pedrero/GC battle, what?

The Vuelta being in a slot one week later combined with crashing out literally the first day is a blessing in disguise. Should be enough time to find a really good level here, but the competition is literally TdF-level.

But Mas is another beast in La Vuelta, so a podium should be pretty realistic I think.
Let's hope Mas is really over his descending disorder.
