No, back then we had a different system with Van Basten. Much more offensive-minded. Only 1 controleur (but no Van Bommel or de Jong type) and 2 offensive midfielders. And the controller was a football playing type under Van Basten.

It was the more classic 4-3-3 / dutch total football system. We crushed France and Italy with it but Russia was much more clever and out played us.
Now the system is different but the players have become..worse

I think Demy De Zeuw played the holding role. And Van Basten started both van Dr Vaart and Snejder in Central Midfield.

The 98 WC and 2000 Euro dutch teams were great. Left back was the only suspect position. U had van Der Saar in goal. Stam and Frank De Boer as Cbs. Reizeger as Right Back. Seedorf, Cocu and Davids in CM. Overmars, Zenden and Ronlad De Boer on the flanks. Bergkamp behind the Striker and Kluivert up top.
Pity they went out in the semis in both tournaments and you failed to qualify for the 2002 WC when Van gaal's spell became a disaster.

I thought Englelaar played alongside De Jong with Sneijder further forward behind Van Nistelrooy.

My mistake. ur right. Englelaar and De Jong it is. But VDV and Snejder both have started and Robben has come off the bench. De Zeeuw has started only the final game.
System is the same. 4-2-3-1 and if my memory serves me right, Englelaar was a tall controlling mid fielder and not a good passer in the xavi, Pirlo mood. So essentially Van Basten has played with the same formation

I still remember being up 2-0 against portugal and throwing our lead away.

And the system wasn't really the same at all, Van Bommel and De Jong are far too negative. You are wrong, Sniejder's role was not the same. So not essentially the same at all.

Schade Holland, alles ist vorbei. Well, not completely, but they don't deserve to go through.

Van Marwijk has to go. His conservatism has gotten the better of him. To start with the same line up (except Vlaar) in the second match as in the first one is just inexcusable. Everyone could see this coming, it seemed like he had a point to prove by leaving Van Bommel and Afellay on the pitch.

I'm hoping for a Russia vs. Germany final (if possible).
