Roglic to follow and wait for O'Conner to drop more time, then blitz the TT. Luckily there's no Pogacar or Thomas breathing down his neck.

Riders are slowly approaching the final time trial in Madrid, yet we're still to solve many storylines of this Vuelta a Espana. Including the main one; Who is going to wear red on the final podium? Against all odds, Ben O'Connor still holds five seconds advantage over Primoz Roglic, who is confident in his time trial ability and thus doesn't need to make any big moves for the rest the race, his sports director Patxi Vila believes.

"I would say we are almost in the lead, so we don't really need to try to drop anyone. That's the most important thing. If someone wants to go, we need to try to follow, that's the most important thing at the moment," Vila told Cyclingnews. "At Lagos de Covadonga we did that - the idea was to follow, to be there and then see if someone has a bad day." On the Tuesday's climb, Roglic seemed to struggle with accelerations, but nothing could be further from truth as the Slovenian comfortably controlled the situation. "The goal there was to ride to the top with Enric and the other big favorites and see if we could get a bit of a lead on O'Connor, without going too crazy. It was already a tough stage. I think this is a moment where we try to avoid big efforts and keep the pace as high as possible. I think it's a moment to control our horses and just ride to the finish with the best."

I agree with this approach. However I would kindly remind Roglic that he has already once falsely believed he had enough advantage and doesn't need to drop Pog over the top of the last mountain stage when he could have gone for it at virtually zero cost (Pog already dropped & Wout in the back group with Pog). If the chance presents itself, then go for it!

He is going to take red tomorrow no matter if he hangs back like on Covadonga or goes on the offensive like on Cuitu Negru. So he might as well go full-gas and start stomping before the last km. The best scenario for him is that O'Connor gets distanced enough tomorrow for both Mas and Carapaz to think that they can get on the podium even if they wait for Picón Blanco on Saturday.

I don’t see where he is weaker except perhaps compared to 2021 edition. He is definitely stronger than 2020 and 2022 editions. I think he’s on par with 2019 edition and as per 2023 he certainly looks stronger now but we’ll never know how much he held back those stages before Angliru. If he doesn’t get dropped in the remaining 2 mountain stages, then the way I see it, this will be at least his second strongest performance so far…
Considering his interrupted schedule this season due to several debilitating crashes it's difficult to compare season performances. I'd say he's just now getting up to speed again and has been fairly conservative about how deeply he commits.
It also helps that his team has had a great week tactically and are much fresher than the other contenders. That's got to be a huge improvement over some other years.
F*ck Visma, too. Primoz is a nice guy but that's gotta be in the back of his mind.

Hard to say on how this extended weekend will unroll. Chasing a stage win on Friday or Saturday, by investing much effort in it, likely not plan A. Best to leave it to Mas, Carapaz and O'Connor to fight it out and to simply follow.

If forced, then to win a stage or more.

Some interesting statistics in regards to ITT performances when compared to Rogličes main rivals at this Vuelta and considering current GC standings. Rogla faced O'Connor, Mas, Carapaz, Gaudu, Rodriguez, Skjelmose, Lipowitz, Sivakov and Landa 111 times and finished ahead 111 times.

This kind of thinking is one "crash/wrong turn/really bad day " away from not winning Vuelta. He needs to put time on everybody BEFORE TT if he can.
