Wasn't he outsprinted by Mas & Superman on the first MTF of the 2021 Vuelta?

I've been watching this stuff for years & I remember a few stages with a so-called 'stomp finish' where Rog was literally asleep at the wheel.

This sprint was all about positioning imo. He was like 6th wheel and coming from behind when Remco went off, then lost a ton of speed through the last corner.

We shouldn't be panicking... yet.

This GT is stacked with top talent & there's loads of extremely difficult stages coming. Bad weather, variable form, crashes... who knows what will happen.

For what it's worth I think Vingegaard is looking good. But I also know that Rog can go from anonymous to stomper in a GT at any point over the three weeks. So this Vuelta is just getting started.

It makes sense Rog was hurting. But it doesn't mean he's totally screwed in this Vuelta.

It's not the Giro where you can count on 15 stages being neutralized because you're up against Thomas and Almeida.

For what it's worth I think the Giro was way harder for Rog, with successive cols & lots & lots of climbing. Looking at the route here, it seems like Thursday, Saturday & Sunday are going to be similar to today (short stages + nothing too difficult before the hard final climb/ramp).

Having been here before (on injury watch after another Rog crash), I think there's a certain type of stage which kills his legs more than others, so I have hope he can minimize losses before rest day.

So Primoz is suffering? Well, this would explain why JV rode a more conservative MTF today. Still it was good, all things considered. But this could be a problem in future stages if he doesn't fully recover.

Primoz was good, I‘m optimistic. But it‘s very close among the best.

Obviously, in this Vuelta, we have round about ten, maybe even more, top GC riders who apparently have prepared perfectly.

Whoever wins this Vuelta will be a worthy winner. This Vuelta could become incredibly nice for us spectators. I cannot wait for the remaining mountain stages. And even the medium mountain stages will be GC relevant. It‘s never plain in Spain, so this will be heaven for riders and spectators who like mountain road pro cycling.

It depends.

Lets say Rogla would be a sole leader. In that case likely no time lost on stage 1, lead-out on stage 2 and a stomp on stage 3. Ideally ending up in leaders jersey after stage 3. Rather silly thing to do if you ask me. But OK.

As JV has two leaders and until situation settles each leader is racing as he sees it fit. That is Jonas not doing a lead-out today and rather going for bonus seconds alone. Rogla on the other hand likely seeing no point in wasting energy today. On top of not being 100%. As in the end he doesn't plan to win this race by 10 minutes and in an ITT some time will likely be shifted too. So chasing bonus seconds is not something that will enable him to win this GT. For now the best strategy is to follow all attacks and keeping the powder dry. And he did just that today.

P.S. Rogla must be doing something right as the top 10 stats already picked him up.

He certainly looked pretty sharp closing down Vingegaard/Ayuso with Evenepoel on his wheel tbf. Today just down to poor positioning I think, the three ahead are elite and even someone of his pedigree in this type of finish you can't make the slightest of errors against this opponent.

The call on the road at that point should've been for Vingegaard to work with Ayuso.
