As babysitter for Basso, I select prologue-specialist Fabian Cancellara from the 2010 Tour.

cancellara_cobbles.jpg

Given how massively overrated he is, I'm surprised he hasn't been picked yet, especially by Hitch, who worship him like fanatics worship their god. His job will be to hold the hand of Basso during any flat stage and keep him safe. I will also need someone to fetch bottles. Other than acting as babysitter, he will also be able to lend a hand in a TTT as well as generally just pull in case it is needed. I have picked 2010 as it was the only year where he was able to win a long ITT in the Tour, although that was mainly because the wind shifted, as well because he showed he can carry someone over the cobbles. Since the field in this Tour will be far better than what he has faced in his career, he will obviously not stand a chance to win any of the TTs, so he will be ordered to hold back and save some energy. As an added bonus, in case Basso punctures/has a mechanical and needs a new bike, he can borrow Cancellara's motorbike.

So far, my team is:
Ivan Basso ('06 Giro)
Piotr Ugrumov ('94 Tour)
Pavel Tonkov ('98 Giro)

Because I need a babysitter and he is pretty good at that. I'm not gonna win with 9 GC riders.

Good pick. Excellent reasoning.

Add that he is teflon when it comes to doping control. A valuable talent, even in a fantasy doping draft.

My next pick is The tashkent terror. I have a few pick up my sleeve who i think nobody else will pick so i need a sprinter who could cause an accident which could take out half the gc men, which would open a door for a guy from my team to win easily.

:(
And I was just starting to like you ;)

Ps, to paraphrase Anquetil to Poulidor "even in this (the clinic doping draft), Cancellara beats Boonen" :p

I agree that he was a better climber there, but he got clubbed by [redacted] in the TTs and didn't really show off his babysitter skillset like he did in 2010.

Tbh I don't think he was at his absolute best there in '08 as he was aiming for the OG.

Still 13 GT winners available. I wonder if they will all go ... probably one unlucky guy will be left out.

There will be a lot more than just 1 not picked. We are now going for other types of riders, sprinters etc. I might pick one more but not sure I will even do that.

I make it 15 GT winners still available.

I thought it was about building the most complete doped team. I did my own mock team. I only had one GT winner on it and built my team around him.

Some great picks. So far only two of my riders have been selected. So many good ones out there. gogogogo!

Ah can't be bothered to go back and count :p

I think most of them will still get picked actually. Some pretty handy riders left.

Surprised how long it took for Cancellara to go though. He gets bonus points for his ability to stop the peloton if your leader has a crash/puncture, incredibly useful. Essential domestique imo.

With the 9th pick of round 5, 49th pick overall, team "La Vie Pas Claire selects (drum roll):

The Vuelta '98 - Abraham Olano

Look at him, Campeon Del Mundo at Duitama in '95. A great year for Abraham Olano, who looked like a younger BigMig, a MiniMig (muhahahahaha), with very good climbing abilities and outstanding ITT talent.

I choose the '98 Vuelta version of Abraham Olano. This was his only GT win, against much adversity, beginning with his own Banesto team's lack of unity. Libertine Seguros eloquently heralded the exploits of "Chava" Jimenez, Olano's teammate. Isolated, Abraham Olano delivered his best climbing performance in a GT to protect his overall lead, he lost the jersey with two days to go, but retook it the next day, for good.

A couple of weeks later, he went on to become ITT World Champion.

I clearly intend to win the TTT. The best Olano is one of the best ITT specialists ever, and he can also run a solid pace up the mountains.

No no no no, post-Ferrari Olano is not a good choice! He climbed a lot better in the 1996 Giro, and probably in the 1996 Tour as well.

Shame Netserk can't pick the 2009 Worlds version. That performance must've had even Berzin, Furlan and Argentin shaking their heads. I'd love to know what kind of jet fuel he was on that day.

You may be right. I didn't follow the 1996 Giro - that's when I moved from Europe to the US. My Olano memories were '95 and '98, both impressive ITT years, and that's really what I'm drafting him for.

I would have taken Olano by now if I hadn't decided to limit myself to the 21st century.
So imo he's a good pick
