I must admit that I considered Rominger as well (Born in Denmark as a little bonus :p), but for my team I have chosen the master of peaking like an angel, Piotr Ugrumov from the '94 Tour.

AzIAYEt.png

For the most part of the race he was just thereabout, but from after Alpe d'Huez (stage 16) he reached his absolute top form and in just three stages (one 2nd place and two stage wins) went from 9th overall 14'08'' after Indurain to 2nd overall 5'39'' after Indurain. In the last of those three stages, the uphill TT to Morzine Avoriaz (profile below), he demonstrated his tremendous form and delivered an epic beat down:

1. Piotr Ugrumov: 1hr 22min 59sec
2. Marco Pantani @ 1min 38sec
3. Miguel Indurain @ 3min 16sec
4. Luc Leblanc @ 3min 50sec
5. Charly Mottet @ 4min 12sec
6. Enrico Zaina @ 4min 17sec
7. Vladimir Poulnikov @ 4min 26sec
8. Jean-François Bernard @ 4min 31sec
9. Alex Zulle @ 4min 49sec
10. Roberto Conti @ 4min 54sec

Even though he won't be at his best for the whole Tour, he is perfect for my team and once he peaks he will be able to cause true havoc and help Basso crack his opponents. Hopefully the upcoming drafts will allow me to continue my trend and pick awesome climbers that will be able to deliver a great show!

Ugrumov is a great pick, I had him going first round. that final week in the '94 Tour is one of the greatest performances ever. he also has one of the highest doped hct:natural hct ratios of all time.

For the 15th pick, I select Richard Virenque (1997 Tour).

virenque.jpg

He was the last real favorite of the hot French housewives (Excluding Voeckler :p) and he was not afraid to go full *** as you can see in this glorious stage, which is highly recommended to watch.

If Ullrich didn't receive help from Riis, he could have lost quite a lot due to Festina assault but he was able to reach Virenque before Courchevel but Festina should be commended for trying their best.

I know that he's not a prime GC contender even though he was 2nd in 1997 Tour but I think that he would be an excellent super-domestique for Riis as he is a perfect climber and descender.

You break my heart...twice. I would have taken him, and yes, he was a prime GC guy. At the time when the big guys were only at the TdF, he was in the mix. Second only to Pantani up the mountains. Too many only remember the 2000s Virenque going for the jersey and one stage.

Serious Sam likes pictures: I had the one ready for Virenque

I select "The Mennonite Missile", Floyd Landis (2006 Tour de France)

33mr213.jpg

A great time trialist, the fastest Alpe d'Huez time of the post-Armstrong era, and the single greatest breakaway ride of the modern era. Landis will serve as our 2nd GC candidate alongside Pantani.

I can't believe I picked a Brit instead of my favorite French guy.

SeriousSam, he was second to Riis at hautacam, second to Ulle at Arcalis, so yes, he got beat a few times. It took mutants on steroids to do him...he dished out more against these guys in the mountains than he took :p

I'm wondering at what stage it would be worth picking up non-climbers even though there is still so many beastly climbers yet to go. Fabian enchillada with the power to stop a whole peloton if your leader punctures is a pretty useful ability though. I reckon he'll go in draft 4.

Also vino in draft 3 ? :D

This thread is a lot of fun. I can't wait to see the guy I'd pick be chosen. I'm surprised to see he has fallen so far down in the order.

I am working on my pick, I am 99% there as far as the rider goes, but my knowledge of cycling in the 90s is weak so I am struggling to work out which race I should nominate.

I choose Alex Zulle as my next pick in the draft.

298470-jul-1995-alex-zulle-of-switzerland-performs-gettyimages.jpg

A contender for the Tour de France who never won the race but finished second in 1995 and 1999 and winner of the 1996, 1997 Vuelta de Espana.

In 95 Zulle finished second to the great Miguel Indurain and well ahead of everyone else. On stage 9 Zulle went clear with a small group early in the stage and then continued on alone to build up a large lead over the mountains. This forced Indurain to attack and chase on the final climb to La Pagne, Indurain made up considerable time but Zulle won the stage by over 2 minutes to move himself up to second in the race.
Zulle was also an excellent TTer, world champion in 1996 so will be a great assert in any TTT.

Round 1
Pick 1: Libertine Seguros - Miguel Indurain ('95 TDF)
Pick 2: The Hitch - Lance Armstrong ('04 TDF)
Pick 3: The Sceptic - Jan Ullrich ('97 TDF)

Pick 7: Netserk - Ivan Basso ('06 Giro)
Pick 8: Zam Olyas - Gianni Bugno ('90 Giro)
Pick 9: Tonton - Evgeni Berzin ('94 Giro)
Pick 10: Ciranda - Roberto Heras ('04 Vuelta)

Round 2
