As my 4th pick I choose Andreas Klöden from the 2006 Tour.

At the peak of the modern era, 2006, Klödi was selected as a loyal helper for his captain Ullrich on a T-mobile team that was firing on all cylinders. After finding out that his dear captain won't be able to start the race, as well as babyface [redacted], he is chosen to lead the team, although it is not the role he is most comfortable with. There's no doubt he'd have performed better riding for a strong captain like on my team, but even with the great pressure of leading the team he still manages to finish 3rd behind lucky [redacted] and brave Floyd. He delivered a very impressive performance on Alpe d'Huez (38'35'', 13th best time) and finished 2nd in the last ITT as well, but most importantly he is a true domestique and will be able to give his absolute best to help the team win.

Damn, really hoped Wiggins would fall to me. There would be no greater domestique for Lance than someone who believes the sun shines out of Armstrong's arse. Also very very good rider for purshing things on the flat if you need, for the ttt and for killer tempo in the mountains.

Burning is putting together a very good team.

Wiggins is a great pick this late in the draft. I don't think his ITT is any worse than Lance or Indurain.

2006 Tour is included in the pre-Puerto in that context. They were fast. Just compare his Alpe times. Slower in the ITT in '04 compared to '06 real mountain stage.

Not that it matters that much for Klöden as he was supplied by Freiburg that year.

It's crazy to think that Basso, Ullrich, Vino and [redacted] were missing. Floyd wouldn't even have podiumed and he was certainly strong enough to have done so in the Lance years.

Oh, so this done based on a single stage performance in a given GT?

Be prepared for him to be a bit off on a couple of stages then.

But as I said, he doesn't have the mentality to lead a team. I certainly think he was overall better in '06 than '04 though.

In 2006 he lost a quite a lot of time on the Pla de Beret stage (for a GC contender and the nature of the climb) and was not good on the stage Landis won (even if he only lost to Sastre, Moreau and Cunego)

Was also 3rd or 4th best from his team in the first TT.

He was much more consistent overall in 2004.

He peaked for the part that was most important. In the end he was only two tactical decisions away from winning it. He was consistent in 2004, but the overall level wasn't that great in that Tour.

Pla de Beret was a brutal stage at a brutal pace. Ferrari numbers on that climb were always going to be low.

He climbed Joux-Plane in 37 and a half minutes in 2006 and Toussuire was climbed faster in 2012.

Klödi was just 15'' behind. Again a brutal stage. All the mountain stages were designed harder in 2006 as well.

With the 39th pick overall, team "La Vie Pas Claire" selects (drum roll): Alejandro Valverde Belmonte ('09 Vuelta).



For over a decade, only one rider has shown the ability to peak for 350 days per year, every year: Alejandro Valverde. Before, during, or after his supension, Valverde is the perfect example of the obvious, unrepentant doper, absolutely shameless. So when it comes to deciding which vintage, or even which month is the best in Valverde's career, none really stands out. 2006? 2008? With a GT to prepare for, my choice is the 2009 version of Valv/Piti.

In 2009, Valverde set his eyes on the biggest prize of all: the Tour de France. Although suspended by the Italian Olympic Committee from racing in Italy for his alleged role in the Operation Puerto doping case, he nonetheless followed his plan: focusing less on the spring classiques, Valverde build up by winning the Volta A Catalunya in May and the Dauphine in June. When his appeal went through arbitration and Valverde was denied the opportunity to steal the Mona Lisa, the Vuelta became his objective of the season.

The '09 Vuelta was Alejandro Valverde's best, most consistent performance in a GT: he didn't have a bad day or fade away in the third week. He produced some very solid performances (9th, 7th, and 7th) against the clock. Finally, in typical Valverde fashion, he padded his lead by out-kicking his opponents in the final hectometers, being very consistent in the MTFs (4th, 3rd, 6th, 3rd, 5th, 2nd). And he won. Hard work paid off

The '09 Vuelta Valv/Piti is the ideal super-domestique, whose explosiveness can thwart attacks from the top-climbers: the ideal bodyguard.

I had another Spanyard in mind, but (in addition to the guy who bigmigged BigMig,) having Froome, Vino, AND Piti in my team was too outrageous to pass on .

In '03 he was a Vino-like, I give you that. But his ITT sucked, he was never anywhere near the top, he had days off...nah...

For piti 2013 tdf could be a shout too seeing as how he was best non sky rider for the first half of the race, and then even after getting screwed by the most unlucky mechanical ever, outclimbed contador on semnoz while not fighting for anything and doing some dom work.

Excellent choice. Too bad he crashed the next year.

Someone that could have rivaled Lance, but like Beloki met with bad luck.

He was actually my fourth choice of those still unpicked.
