Favorite Jersey/Kit vs. Worst

Never got the appeal of wanting to buy a national champions' jersey - I think you should only be able to wear them unless you actually are national champion.

FdJ make the best current jersey IMO

I may have no taste, but i kinda like the ag2r outfit!

I am with you, I don't understand the derision toward the ag2r kit. I think it is tasteful and not overdone. I also like FDJ for current kits.

Hard to beat the older kits (Faema, La Vie Claire, Brooklyn, Bianchi, etc.) for pure class.

Another for the worst list is Carrera when they had the jean shorts.....

It goes far and away against my normal postion regarding that kind of thing (I agree with you luckyboy about the only wear it if you haved earned it thing regarding national kit), but having looked at that link from Joe I really want that Boonen kit. Like really. And I can never be National Champion of Belgium. Right? Please say thats right?

The Boonen Kit from Nonstopciclismo.com is A-OK

I don't know if it at all goes ANY way towards making it more acceptable for you, but I have the 2009 Boonen kit, + the 2008 champ of Belgium kit - and it is very nice. I, too, never would have even considered wearing a natl champion's strip w/o being a natl champ when racing, but after all that's happened since 2006, I realize that life is short and I'm going to wear the kit that I want to wear when training - especially when it's MARKETED to me by the teams and their sponsors.

So GO FOR IT! Contact Martha at nonstopciclismo.com and tell her I sent you. They'll take good care of you.

My all time favorite is Cipollini in the Aqua e Sapone Zebra stripes. Also the all time favorite sprint train, once they hit the front with 5k to go, you just knew that he would win.

+1. I even have the matching Specialized zebra print bike. Not one can match Cipo's pimpness

Pippo is clearly the heir to Super Mario in the style department.

Blasphemy! When Pippo was on Liquigas he couldn't pull off the Stars and Stripes shorts ;)

really can't agree with you there - the variety of national colours make for awesome novelty kits. especially if it is an obscure combination - at the time Vino's Kazakh T-Mobile kit was ground-breaking. much more interesting and distinctive than a normal team kit.

i also agree that when replica kit is heavily marketed, anyone is 'entitled' to wear it. there is no honour, real or perceived, once kit is all covered in marketing logos. wear whatever you like.

on topic, i LOVE the zebra, and own the tights, which are probably my favourite piece of clothing. the peloton is really missing a cipo figure nowadays.

I think that this is the worst current kit, and will probably make the list of all-time awfulness. The jersey is wretched enough, but those shorts!

That's going to break all kinds of obscenity laws when it gets wet.

Currently I like FdJ, Colnago's blues and Landbouwkrediet: http://www.landbouwkredietcyclingte...&lang=EN&albumSelected=169&photoSelected=4970

(As a bonus, please note the early front runner in the "Podium Hottie of 2010" competition. The one on the right.)

Used to love the pink ONCE , just about any Bianchi, La Vie Claire, Casino. Also the recent all-white Bessons (now replaced).

What I don't like........

Obviously the Shack duds are repulsive. Might have been better with black replacing the grey (look at the bike which is a nice paintjob).

Skil. No. No, no, no. Looks like a toothpaste tube.

Cervelo. Something rather nondescript about it.

The Spanish TT champ jersey. Seriously Alberto, please leave it at home. Maybe very close to the fire? Very, very close? Mmm-hmmm.

Historically;

Systeme-U (whose aesthetic horror was the real reason Fignon lost in '89).

Kelme (hideous in itself, but hideous-to-infinity when wrapped around the subhuman, crawling-all-over-the-bike frame of Fernando Escartin).

Growing up I had a burning desire for the Fagor jersey. Can't understand that now, but even Stephen Roche seemed to look good in it then.

TBH, a lot of semi-nasty current jerseys would be redeemed if paired with black shorts.

Yah, tough to beat Cipo and the zebra stripes, only he could pull it off. That was a good year for him, M-SR, G-W (pictured here, poor Fred, 2nd to Super Mario in 2 big races in a 30 day stretch) and the world championships (where of course he didn't wear the zebra trade team kit).

Pippo is clearly the heir to Super Mario in the style department.

That's my favorite kit ever, followed closely by the crusifix kit from Rock(the one with barbed wire). Thankfully both kits (and many others from Rock) hang in my closet.

EDIT The Boonen Natl Champ jersey looks cool as well, very classic looking to me. I don't really have a worst kit in mind, the bad ones I just forget, and of course never buy.

The 1990 Toshiba jerseywas one of the worst of all time. Taking styling cues from the WWI "Dazzle" cammo pattern, it was hard to tell if riders were coming or going.

I can only provide the link, because they really figured out how to block right clicking on memoire du cyclisme, even against FireFox. That graphic doesn't even begin to do that jersey justice. It's up there with Castorama for worst jersey ever.

The 7-Eleven jersey is always one of my favorites. Of course the chick wearing it could make even Toshiba or Castorama look good.

Though it's nice to have a leggy blonde modelling the jersey (like Edwig Van Hooydonck, for example), here's ak-zaaf's suggestion in full technicolor! :)

Couldn't find a decent pic. Kinda wish you hadn't thrown that garbage in my face either ;)

was always partial to the old System U jersey.
Currently liking the Saxo Bank jerseys.
also partial to the UniSA jersey with the blue and yellow hoop on the white.

interesting that no one's mentioned those Mapei rainbow jerseys as the worst yet...

Can anybody get a picture of the Le Groupment jersey and we can then close the worst jersey competition.

Agree with whoever said about Memoire-de-Cyclisme having their sire well protected but its a good site for history anoraks on teams and jerseys.

I'd actually put Kelme as one of my better ones, but then again I also liked the Mapei kits so perhaps I'm beyond help
