Very selfish move by Afellay. If Japan claws back in the last few minutes, that might be where we lost it.

Nice... Tulio, the centre-back was the one hassling the goalie... So much for the great Japanese positional game :p:p:p

The Netherlands have qualified for the second round without having done much.
Hopefully Paraguay will prove more of a challenge.

The bad news for Holland is they dont look like contenders.
The good news is no one else does.

They did not play badly, but they also didn't play superbly. England fans once again, like many enthusiastic fans world wide do, expected more. This comes down to their attitudes. As I said, over inflated idea of self worth. Mistakes happen.

Honestly, I think they did play really badly. There wasn't one player who tried to take charge of the game and change it. Also Capello didn't do anything to change the formation when things clearly weren't working. You look at the England team as individuals compared to Algeria and I DO expect more.

As for whether booing works, I suspect it depends on the individual player.

Well... We got the result, and not much more than that. There is still a lot of room for improvement, and I hope they can, although this game hasn't really inspired me. We need Robben in the worst possible way though.

Are we the first team to qualify for the next round? Quite bizarre actually, with two of the worst games I've ever seen Holland play. Oh well, OK. This is how a German usually must feel.

Interesting to see that Elia-Afellay-Huntelaar provide more danger in ten minutes than Van der Vaart-Sneijder-Van Persie in 80 minutes, although of course at that time Japan were more concerned with actually trying to score a goal.

We're not qualified yet. If Denmark and Cameroon draw we're officially through, although no assurance of 1st place yet.

Atrocious game.

Movement off the ball is horrible. All passes go to players who are already 'there', or have arrived in an open space. Others subsequently don't anticipate, and only start breaking away from their defenders when someone has already received a pass and is 'looking for the next one'. The ball tempo and circulation is slower than grass grows. Too much hesitation in passing, because no one tries to come clear off of a defender. Most offensive people are afraid to turn towards the goal especially on the midfield, so they barely ever create any forward threat. All passes go back or laterally. Affelay is actually one of the few who always tries to turn towards the goal.

So glad that VdV got substituted and I hope he doesn't play anymore. Too slow in terms of ball handling and has no speed in his actions, lets his man go too often, barely recovers a ball when he loses it. No threat whatsoever whenever he touched the ball.

VanPersie is clearly not on form.

Defensively, it's crazy to see how they tried to dig themselves in on the 16m. As if they have the qualities to do that. Too often people left their man go, and defensive intervention on the midfield was too often too late. How is that Japanese midfielders could move towards the goal, with space ahead of them, and a great view to distribute passes to all sides of the field.

6 points... I am glad it's not a jury sport

Just another boring game decided by an unfortunate keeper :(

Siesta time now. Let's see if Australia and Ghana can keep me awake :p

Aussies looking lively.

EDIT: And score too. Nice. Again, pretty big flub by the goalie on that goal there. If he can't get it in one he should've forced it out, what with the advancing Australian.

Damn... If it stays like this we might be looking at a situation where no African team makes it to the final 16. That would be sad.

Ghana have 3 points in the bag.
It would make an interesting final day with 3 3 3 3

Why would it sadden you?

From the whole of Africa only 10 000 fans came to RSA. Considering one country england has 3 times that many fans in the country id say it shows that the people there care a lot less about this world cup then it is hyped up that they are.

Actually i think the red was a bit unfair. His hand was not outstretched. He couldn't do much about it.

This group is so predictable.

Serbia have done a wierd superman handball to give away a penalty in BOTH matches.
Australia have had an unfair red card in BOTH matches.
Ghana have done recieved penalties from handballs and scored in BOTH matches.

Wow, a match that doesn't put you to sleep within ten minutes. A bit unfortunate for Kewell, but the ref had no choice.

if the red was to ghana it would make it interesting.
Since the red is to Australia i think it kills the match as Australia are the worse team anyway.
