DAMN THIS IS BAD.
Netherlands face Italy in last 16, while Spain get free ride to the semis, where they will most likely face Argentina or Spain. (I still think Spain will top their group, though i hope not)

Don't know what to think. Netherlands won their two games, but their play has been almost as unimpressive as Italy's.

I'm not sure Spain will top their group or get a free ride now that everyone knows who to knock them and they seem not to have alternative solutions.

I see Italy as a strong team because its hard to beat them in knockout stages. I Dont ever expect Italy to score many goals or even have that many chances. But especially in knockout games they are very difficult to beat.
As far as i remember their last match at the world cup is always a draw.
1990 - drew to Argentina 0-0/1-1? lost on penalties (defending champs +finalists)
1994 drew to brazil, 0-0 lost on penalties in final
1998 drew to france, 0-0 lost on penalties (eventual winner)
2002 lost to south korea, last minute extra time golden goal (eventual semi finalist)
2006 drew 1-1 to france, won on penalties in final

Also people act as if Spain beat Italy in 2008. nah nah They won on penalties.
Guess what the score was

Yep thats right 0-0:cool:

So come to think of it when was the last time Italy lost (speaking 90 mins wise) a knockout game in the WC. i dont know

Even if Netherlands are better which i think they are, italy let in very little goals and are a team i would sure as hell want to avoid.

As for Spain, if Switzerland draw Chille and beat Honduras Spain cant come first which would give them a very difficult route to final. But if Switzerland dont do that and SPain beat honduras and Chille then they will come top and then face Portugal/ Cotedivoir in last 16 and Paraguay/ denmark/ japan in quaters, none of which were seeded teams. Thats what i call a free ride to semis- not having to play any seeded teams .

Another gorgeous goal by the Brazillians.

Now Cote d'Ivoire will have to throw caution to the wind. Or they could be out be in dire straights

Brazil are misplacing so many simple passes. But it doesnt really matter atm because their defence is just too strong for their opponents

Luis Fabiano. MAGNIFICENT!

EDIT: Hmmm.... He used his arm, it looked like, twice to control the ball. Probably should've been called back.

not the best game, but the goals have been spectacular!

edit: and yes, on the replay it did look like he used his hand a little bit..

WHAT?!? The ref suspected there might've been a handball, but let it stand, smiling at Fabiano instead?

Is the fix in?

This is gonna be messi.... I mean messy.

If Cote d'Ivoire cant stop the bleeding they're gonna end up with a horrible goal difference that they'll need to repair against super-defensive North Korea to potentially get above Portugal for 2nd.

That would imply Portugal actually being able to score goals :p

You big tease :p

Anyway, why am I more pumped for Portugal than you are (granted I love Portugal)? I understand you're realistic, but is there no national pride that inspires you to hope for the best?

Anyway, Cote d'Ivoire haven't exactly shown themselves to be big on goal scoring this WC either

It's the World Cup of Handball.

Luis Fabiano handled twice before scoring.

But it's Brazil, so that's OK.

The referee even shared the joke afterwards with the striker.

This is a major problem: impressionable, star-struck officials who defer to the high-status teams.

The Italy penalty was laughable - De Rossi threw himself at the ground. His jersey was held (to keep the poor unstable boy on his feet!) but it didn't deny a goal-scoring opportunity. And how many penalties are given for jersey holding these days?

Oh, but tiny New Zealand was outplaying and shaming football royalty - we'll soon fix that. The Kiwis were robbed to save Italy's embarrasment.

Football needs to get professional: video refereeing is needed badly.

I remember refs mistakes in previous WC's against any other big team, but never against Brazil

No video replay technology as long as Blatter clings his clammy, greedy hands onto power. And since he can use FIFA's many millions and funnel a couple here and there to reps from 'persuadable' countries we'll never get to replace him while he's alive.

Blatter should shrivel up and die, do the world a favor.

I think it was..anyway, as long as there's no video for the referees, and they have to make a decision after watching it once, real time, I think it's a good thing to give the attacking team the benefit of the doubt, if it's marginal. I'd rather see a goal wrongly judged onside, than a rightful goal wrongly denied.
