Especially as they have to pay millions of pounds to get footage of this commercial event, they could earn back a big part of that expense by showing some ads around the game...

BBC tends to split on political lines - lefties have no problem with this particular poll tax because of the nature of it's coverage.

Right wingers tend to dislike, although many like it on tradition grounds.

Objectively, it's a pretty bonkers setup, but it's a brave government to get rid of this funding arrangement with so many media types can stick the boot in.

It's the same in the Netherlands, all matches are live on the government supported broadcaster, but they are allowed to show ads. I hate ads, but it does mean I have to pay less in taxes to see this WC.

Ads can easily bias the reporting and scheduling, I much prefer that the BBC is left impartial.


The BBC also produces some of the best TV in the world that likely would not be produced by commercial TV channels who don't like to take risks. Just look at David Attenborough's programmes.

I also think it's unfair competition (in the Netherlands, commercial broadcasters have no chance of outbidding the public broadcaster for events like this because of subsidies). But alright I will stop the debate

The World Cup is guaranteed to be on terrestrial TV in the UK, it's on the protected list. I don't know how much they pay for it, but that must have a massive effect on the possible costs.

BBC sport lost all the support from me they could ever amass when they spend 1 million tax payers money to construct a lift for 2 weeks of the Euros to the studio.

Because their "panelists" didn't feel like walking up stairs.

By impartial I mean not bought and paid for by a particular political thinking. There will always be bias in programmes, that's just human nature, someone has to have editorial power.

Lucky for me, I can stay off the BBC and ITV as RTE over here show every game. The pundits don't pull punches either and wouldn't last 5 mins if they were on those channels.

you have to pay a yearly fee to watch tv in the uk though, don't you?! It's the same in Germany for example. So those channels are not "free", even less as in the Netherlands where it is financed by tax money (as far as I know)

That's exactly the point, that yearly fee would be smaller if they allowed even 2 minutes of ads before and after the game. You're correct in the Netherlands, subsidy for government channels is included in the general taxation.

Indeed. You can't even watch other channels without paying for the BBC - I could very happily just watch Sky and would do so if they didn't send such rude threatening letters.

The BBC is sadly far too comfortable in making the same old Attenborough programme, the same soft left news coverage, and crap drama (when the private sector in the USA is currently revolutionising the quality of TV drama).
