The Tactical Situation

22 minutes!

This situation favors individual escape artists in the last 20km. With teams doing more work to keep the break at a measurable :) distance they will less be able to protect their sprinters. Assuming the break lasts a while, that is.

Recommendation: reassess the tactical situation after a few circuits.

If the front five maintain this lead into their 2nd lap, how will the Commisaires manage the race? Would they be able to sit in the Peloton if they lap?

22 mins, roughly one lap. Would be superb if the first groups completes the first lap at the exact moment that the bunch swings onto the circuit. Slip into into the masses, ninja-style. Just follow the group, pretend to be chasing too. Let everyone wonder who was in that breakaway and who wasn't. Get your the team mates to address you by the wrong names, sowing more confusion. All without race radios , which would simply beam in the correct bibs and spoil the party before it started. Lovin' it already!

Ah well, I can dream...

What a mess, I think it is going to be awfully close. Can the breakaway group draft off the peloton? How will this work?

Breakaway averaging 45km/h thus far, this is going to be awful close when they get round to the start finish, I'll say less than 1.5km in it!

Of course not. No one wants a nobody to win, least of all the UCI. Their rules regarding lapped fields are vague, so they'll "interpret" them.

That said, it won't happen. It's still stupid to let anyone take so much time only to have to work harder later on, before it counts. Is this the lack of team radios showing?

Maybe, but presumably the peloton are still getting info by chalkboard (?)

Why were the peloton dawdling along at 25kmh allowing the breakaways to amass such a lead? They knew what was happening. The motorbike with the chalkboard showed the peloton how much of a lead the breakaways had.

Yes, they knew it was happening. What they didn't know is if they should pull or let some other team do the job. I reckon they were all looking at each other and giggling nervously whenever the chalkboard moto came up.

(Of course, maybe it didn't have anything to do with team radios)

the rules arent vague.

Any individual rider, or group of riders numbering less than 20 have to withdraw from the race as they are lapped.

For groups larger than 20 its down oto the commisaires.

The peloton come to the start line still on the same lap as the leaders, but any riders dropped off the back and lapped will get illiminated.

The lead group are not allowed to mix in with the peloton. Its the pelotons job to make sure they dont mix up with the lead group.

According to P&P the support cars are being pulled out because the gap between the leaders & the peloton is too close, ie, leaders too close to rear of peloton.

Anyone else notice the guy in the GB kit holding up the no support car sign. Guess it means that the shared car with the serbs is still up ahaead so any punctures and they are screwed.

Only have 3 riders so they have to share with Serbia. I presume since the Serbian rider has gone down the road the cars with him.

What happens if a British rider has a puncture?
