Did anyone read the CN sponsorship report thing? Thought of starting a thread on a similar subject as it's interesting. I noticed Nike getting involved in casualwear for some WT teams, that's new, no?

IIRC they did the kits for Discovery and Radioshack.

Did they do the original Radioshack kit too?

Edit: first two. I don't know why I thought they weren't involved in cycling recently.

Damn, could ****in' Aso stop only one time to force Unipblic to give away consolation invites for the Vuelta?

I mean NettApp WTF!? Pretty Useless!

Why is Gianni Savio blacklisted by Unipublic? C'mmon Andoni Giocatolli would deliver so much more to the Vuelta than any other stupid PCT team. With this parcours I really thougt they might choose for Androni just one time.

I very much doubt Androni even requested a Vuelta wildcard. Too many clashes with the Autumn Italian Classics which is where Androni annually book their Giro wildcard by winning the Coppa Italia.

Former GT-winner about to be taken down

Clip from http://cyclingtips.com.au/2013/05/the-secret-pro-2/:

'While I’m on the topic of Grand Tours, there’s talk going around the peloton that a former Grand Tour winner who’s about to be taken down for a biological passport irregularities. I can’t say who it is but when the news breaks you’ll know who I’m talking about. You can probably figure it out. It’s a good thing that’s he’s been found out; it shows that the biological passport is doing its job.'

Wonder who that is?

Vuelta 2015: there will be 5 stages in Holland, first is a TTT in Drenthe (north of Holland). Then there will be another stage in the north in Friesland, which partially follows the route of the Elfstedentocht. Fourth stage will start in Alkmaar and heads towards the south. Day after another stage in the south of Holland in Breda.

Little too much I guess

edit: ah I see this tweet now:

GT organisers forced by UCI to do at least 5 stages before a rest day since 2012. NL too far from Spain = no other chance.

Maybe the organizers are under the impression that the Spanish crown still controls Netherlands, making it a legitimate (yet distant) part of a national tour.

I have no problem with the grand tours starting or venturing into neighboring countries, but this obsession with every grand tour starting in the Netherlands is just silliness.

Spanish crown never controlled the Netherlands.

Just a coincidence that the count of Holland was the same person as the king of Aragon, king of Castille, count of Flanders, Duke of Brabant, etc

There was still a different law, culture and language in all the different territories and the king couldn't just do what he wanted. Proven by the rebellion in the 16th century. In Holland he was the count of Holland, In Flanders the count of Flanders, in Aragon the king of Aragon, in Castille the king of Castille and so on.

Charles V is the only "Spanish" king that ruled over the entire Netherlands and Spain at the same time. He was born in Ghent, spent his entire childhood/adolescense there and barely spoke any Spanish. And he was of course born from an Austrian family.

Just like the Spanish colonies belonged to the crown of Castille, but not Aragon.

Spanish crown was formed in 1716(I think), Spain lost all teritories in the low countries by then. Even Belgium.

===

Of course this is all off topic, so to bring it on topic:

Boonen will start in the Tour de Picardie, Tour of Belgium is also an option after that, but not yet decided. I hope he does. And Luis Leon Sanchez could also make his return to racing in the Tour of Belgium perhaps. Cancellara also confirmed, but that was known already.

Stybar is currently out because of a knee infection. He had surgery and will have to rest for 3 weeks. Won't be starting in California.

I stand corrected! Thanks for the info.

Also, any target race for Stybar's return?

Omega Pharma - Quick-Step Cycling Team rider Zdenek Stybar underwent surgery this morning to his right knee due to inflammation of a prepatellar tissue. The surgery was performed by professor Bellemans at the AZ Gasthuisberg Leuven. The surgery went well and Stybar is already at home.

Stybar has to observe a three week rest period before he can start training again.

"We decided with the team to perform this surgery to solve this problem that affected me since the Classics," Stybar said. "We tried to observe a period of rest after the Classics, but the problem didn't solve itself. That's why, together with the team medical staff, we decided I should have surgery performed. It's a pity, but it was necessary. Now I will take the time to recover and then in the upcoming week with the team we will reschedule my program. I would like to thank professor Bellemans and his staff for their kindness and professionalism."

This makes sense, but it beggs the question why our national anthem refers to him as 'the king of Spain', despite being written in the 16th century. So apparently at least during the conflict it seems that people in the Netherlands felt he was first and foremost 'the king of Spain'.

'den Koning van Hispanje
heb ik altijd geëerd.'
