38 not as strong as he was in his peak but still battling after winning tour etc, sacrifising everything to continue going in GC at this age, speak alot of the hearth of this one.

A true gentleman too so it seem atleast. A cycling royalty from this generation in many aspects other than on the bike itself for me. Deserves respect , gratz on your podium.

99% sure this is the last GT podium. Even if he tried next year (which I doubt, and only should be possible in the Giro at this point) surely its over now.

Could be a great all-round dom and maybe give the classics a shot, something like an Andrey Amador when he still could climb.

Good performance and minus one stage a strong contender to finish second overall. Nonetheless Thomas was rather consistent through the whole race and finished on the podium, again.

P.S. Obviously that is a very strong sign, Thomas will never finish on a GT podium again, as media started to spin this.

In the Tour France 2022, he had to ride in a way that was not comfortable zone for him, and he succeded well, because he was by far the third best climber. He dropped all the other GT riders except for Vingegaard and Pogacar.

It's something that not happened in this Giro, clearly the age started to affected him, and that's something normal.

Stranger things have of course happened, but Thomas has a contract for next year as well.

If he went for Roubaix next year, it would be coming full circle. After all, when Wiggins made the final group of 10 in the 2014 P-R, there was another Team Sky rider in the group: Thomas.

He could top 10 if he trained specifically for it. No need to get GC lean, for example. Just keep grinding along.

True, I guess we all know how more punchy and more Classics able he was back then. I'm just guessing he has came so far after those days, that maybe it's not going to happen. At least that's how it sounds to me when listening his podcast.

Then again he lately said in a pod that it's always the same thing right after the race; never again, but few days later he's thinking, well what's next in the calendar.

But the young generation swing is really rough at the moment, same Tadejs Remcos Mathieus Vouts etc etc are lined up there at the cobbles and classics. It's never getting easier, they just go faster.

Thomas did however spend his first six pro years using the road to supplement his main focus of the track. 2013 (at the age of 26/27 ) was his first full year on the road following gold in his 2012 home olympics.
