Tarvis - Longarone

Perhaps this stage, if it should happen, will include the Passo di Forcella? In any case, the Forcella is being prepared for a through stage, not just a mountain finish...

No, that stage is gonna have a fairly easy route. The Passo Di Forcella (aka Stentaria) will probly be included in 2015.

I never heard Nibali saying anything about next season. But everyone is sure he's coming.

Nibali said(about month ago) that he will be a leader in Giro cos he wants to win the race and Fuglsang+Brajkovic will ride Tour.

...and Italy.

The only hope is that he dislikes them enough to seek revenge.

Movistar will probably send a team led by Capecchi and maybe Quintana for this one, or do what they did this year and give the likes of Intxausti free reign. After all, he has just come top 10 of the Vuelta, and that's after losing 3 minutes in the Valdezcaray stage because Movistar only had him and Cobo in the front group. They sacrificed Intxausti because really, it's not on to have the defending champ being asked to domestique on stage 4, but looking at it in retrospect perhaps they would rather have left Beñat up there.

I could see Intxausti being given the leader role for next year. His racing in the Vuelta was quite impressive, and he proved that he can be consistent. Quintana is still too young to be a team leader I think.

I heard Valverde saying he'd like to ride the Giro cos it suits him perfectly. Though, that interview was made quite a long ago, in june 2010, iirc

That was when he was banned. I think he made some comments like that shortly before his ban, but I think that was more posturing and firing potshots at the Italians for banning him cos he couldn't ride there at the time than anything else.

Read in another thread that Capecchi and Szmyd are going to be leaders for Movistar in the Giro.
Makes sense of them being signed.

Valverde & Quintana to ride the Tour apparently.

He sure knows how to live off his reputation...

indeed, 2 years and counting living on the spoils of the 2010 giro.

We don't really know for sure though, because Szmyd is only as good as the leader he's dragging around. In 2009 he was strong and sending guys out the back door for fun, and in 2010 Liquigas needed the field shredded asap so turned to him to grind it out.

In 2011 he plodded up Finestre, not really shrinking the group, but then after he swung off Nibali was the first guy in difficulty, so we don't know whether he was going at that pace because it was all he had or because he was trying to keep Nibali in contact and using his reputation as a destructive domestique to discourage others from attacking on the basis that "if I can hang with Szmyd's pace I'm doing pretty well". Ditto 2012, as Basso clearly showed that in reality he didn't have it at the Giro.

Yup. Szmyd still has it.

He won't be as useful to Movistar as Costa, obviously, but I'm sure his salary will reflect that. Good signing, IMO.

Was he though?

It seems to me in those races he only beat a bunch of have-been's or never-were's, or else guys who were not in form.

2nd on the Punta Veleno stage to Pozzovivo was a good performance and he did finish ahead of Rujano who was one of the big favourites for the stage that day.

BTW it's a pity we won't see this climb possibly ever in the Giro with the roads being too narrow.

Angelo Zomegnan ponders what might have been:

Rujano was a favourite to fail, he has done absolutely nothing this year...

Szmyd's days are past. I fear Movistar is going to pay too much for his signing...

About Punta Veleno, it's basically a carbon copy of the Zoncolan. Why do we need another Zoncolan?

He 20 seconds behind Pozzovivo who a month later was shredding the field on Giau and won a stage in impressive fashion.

I agree that Szmyd is probably going to struggle if he does get this leadership position, but I wouldnt write him off totally, as he has never been in that position.

The stage finish in Vicenza will be between 21st and 23rd of May according to a local newspaper, and it will come from the Garda Lake. It could be either a flat or uphill finish. Pretty sure it will be the stage after the MTT. That would mean having the MTT on 21st, straight after a post-Galibier rest day, and Vicenza on 22nd.

1 Napoli - Napoli TTT [flat] ****
2 Napoli - Vico Equense (or Monte Faito) [Mountain (or MTF)] ****
3 Sorrento - Ascea [hilly?] ****
4 ??? - Cosenza [hilly?] ****
5 ??? - ???
6 ??? - ???
7 ??? - ???
8 ??? - ???
9 Sansepolcro - Firenze [Worlds circuit] *****
REST (transfer to Cordenons)
10 Cordenons - Malghe Del Montasio [MTF] *****
11 Tarvisio (or Cave Del Predil) - Vajont [Hilly]*****
12 Longarone - Treviso [flat] *****
13 Busseto - Cherasco [hilly] ****
14 Cervere - Monte Jafferau [MTF] ****
15 Cesana - Galibier [MTF] ****
REST
16 Mori - La Polsa [MTT] ****
17 ??? - Vicenza [hilly] ****
18 Vicenza - Bergamo(?) ***
19 ??? - ???
20 ??? - Gavia [MTF] ****
21 Milano ITT ****

NOTE: The resulting transfer would be enormous.

That's what I suggested a couple of weeks ago  Or similar.
Looks reasonable. The transfer is huge but you have the rest day.
