Giro 2017, stage 18: Moena - Ortisei 137 km

Quintana's inability to TT decently will always affect his ability to be a multiple tour winner. He will always be a podium contender but falls short of dominating GC races due to his lack of TT ability. He is the one rider under pressure to take time on every mountain stage and he gets more flak than anyone else for not attacking in the mountains every single day. Some days he just doesn't have it and today it was quite obvious that it was one of those days.

Does anyone really believe that Quintana is going for the double?

Yes but the excuses will come thick and fast and it's already started. Quintana and team management can't even agree on the information they are giving out about how he is feeling. If he wins the Giro then yes he was going for the double. If he loses then no he wasn't going for it ! The chances are he won't win either if today was any indication.

I think Valverde will take over tour leadership contention for movistar in July.

I do as well. Of course, we've got only Contador's 2015 over the last 3 years as an example, and he made the mistake of riding and winning the Route du Sud between them.

Big Tom cannot loose this in high mountains. He does not have to be scared of any attacks in last or penultimate climbs, as long as he can follow the power meter plans. Computers will calculate exactly how much seconds he can loose riding the planned tempo.

He was alone 50 km in stage 16 and he lost practically nothing.

He can lose it only in long range attack missing the decisive split.
He can lose it only the way Froome lost his win and Contador his second place in last Vuelta or Purito in 2012.

well said. I agree and the proof will be in the penultimate day of the tour as there is a 23km ITT of which Froome will solidify yet another win.

Heh, Dumoulin "Quintana and Nibali only focus on me, [...], would be nice if they lose their podium spot in Milan" :D

"If there is a simple battle and Dumoulin is alone, the pink jersey has to close [down] everyone who attacks him. If I'm fourth and he asks me to work I won't do a turn, because finishing third or fourth won't change my life."

Vincenzo Nibali

And he's perfectly right, that's how you race to win, of course it's a gamble.

God he's not! How many times I have to repeat this.

A Pinot and Zaka close to Nibali are a potential help to Tom D in case he is dropped by Nibali.
Because they smell the podium.
On the other hand, now Dumoulin will also have to watch Pinot. I think Nibali and Quintana were right. Dumoulin got a free ride most of the day, even though he was without teammates for half of it. If they didn't leave him do some work, he would have been dragged to the line by nr 2 and 3 in the standings. That sounds quite ridiculous.

With he remaining stages and their respective profiles, I think Pinot will watch Dumoulin more than the other way around.
Excessive pride is the root of most irrational behaviours. Nibali and Quintana's pride of not racing for second did more harm than good to them today.

I'm tired of that woman screaming in the background of the English stream.Any stream in other language, not geo-restricted?

Me too, incredibly annoying. I'd actually rather listen to Kirby if it meant not listening to that women's voice!

The columbian commentator, yep it is rather irritating ..

I don't care what anyone says but this arragonce ...there is a massive presumption that he has won already and Nairo and Nibali are only riding for podium

Plus Nairo went up to him at the end to shake his hands and he had a go then.....if they want to ride only for the win that is their business and it is better for cycling

Dumo still have a lot to learn. Froome would never say something like that. He knows that his rivals are there to WIN the Giro. Not collecting podium spots in a race they both already have won.

I find it strange that he really thinks that Nibali and Quintana should've worked for him.

Nibali: "There is karma, Dumoulin can pay on the road for what he said." (RAI) #Giro100
Lol karma. Big words from somebody who has unsportsmanlike as #1 in his ways to win races. If anything it would be nice if Nibali would be hit by any sort of karma for once. But since the guy is the luckiest rider on the planet he will probably have it his way again.

Quite stupid actually by Tom saying he doesn't understand the tactics of Nibali and Quintana by letting Pozzo, Zakarin and Pinot get a couple of minutes and losing their potential podium place in that way.

Tom: Nairo and Vincenzo will do everything to make you nervous the coming days. If they are not able to do it by attacking and dropping you on the climbs, which is obvious atm, they will do it by getting as much riders as possible high up in GC. Then Tom will have to react in the coming days when someone like Pinot or Zakarin attacks from afar, otherwise there's the possibility they will grab the maglia rosa because of the lack of cooperation by the big three.

If Pinot attacks saturday in the valley between Grappa and the last climb, Nairo and Quintana can sit in Tom's wheel, hoping to wire him out, so they can profit from it and attack him at the right moment, when he's vulnerable and beyond his limit. Then they can break him and he can lose the Giro.

The more riders Tom has to keep in eye, the better it is for all his potential rivals.

He starts talking like he has at least one GT under his belt and that this Giro is already won. Watch out Tom, it ain't over till it's over.

Haha, I already said the guy was way too arrogant, four stages ago (and I got insulted by half the Dutch fans of the forum) ! There you go.
You are absolutely right: he has not even climbed on a GT podium yet and he is acting like a seasoned peloton boss.

Nibali very annoyed with TD.

Translation

He would be happy if I and Quintana lost the podium... I don't give a damn of what he thinks. He'd better be careful, because he could loose the podium too. I've never been so cocky. He should learn to keep his feet on the ground and he'd better speak after reaching Milan in pink, certainly not today
The stage could have ended in a very different way. Tom is certainly good and we must congratulate him, but today he's also been quite lucky because our and Movistar tactic was perfect. He managed to get back thanks to the pretty favourable course. Mine and Nairo's decision not to answer Pinot and Pozzovivo's attacks? Not Dumoulin's business! He cannot ask us to escort him to Milan and shake his hands...
