People keep overestimating the Movistar team. They're quantity over quality. They're loaded with guys "who can climb" But none of them will drag Quintana up a mountain at a worrisome pace for any other GC contender.

And then we're not even touching on the fact that Quintana has trouble out-climbing Reichenbach these days...

As single climb stages go this is a good one. Pretty hard climb overall but as you go up it gets gradually easier until flat at the top. That pretty much forces everyone's hand early on. I think there will be an intense battle between the teams for position at the bottom. Maybe some drama as well the way things are simmering - all hell could break loose if there is a crash or mechanical for one of the podium riders

They just "smile and wave" on TV, that mean few how it will be in reality :)

I hope that today even someone else then Nibali and Quintana will try, everyone is waiting for them
now Pinot and Zakarin are close so Dumoulin must watch more riders and will have harder to control race

It's the difference between Sky TDF and Movistar Giro. Sky TDF have guys like Poels, Thomas and Landa to drag Froome at supersonic speeds. Movistar have a lot of guys who can climb at decent speeds, but not supersonic. So no use to Quintana.

As for today, best chance for quintana to gain back time now. First few km's are like Blockhaus. But if Dumoulin has the legs he still won't win much. The flatter bit does not suit Q.

The first 55-60 km of the stage should be pretty interesting tbh, the terrain is there for a Formigal like ambush. However the fact that there is a very tough MTF in the end will probably scare everyone and no one will go for 175 kms preceding that MTF.
Then the ascent and descent of Sella Chianzutan can be interesting, if Movi/Bahrein have riders in the breakaway and if Nibali/Quintana can attack.

But probably nothing will happen till the start of the final climb.

He already has one.

Moreover, he already has non-ITT stage wins in all 3 GTs during his career.

If Quintana was Contador I would expect him to put 3 team-mates in a breakaway and then go all-out on penultimate climb and try to bridge across. But somehow I don't believe Quintana will do this.

Nibali could try to do the same. He has a better chance because he could potentially drop others on a descent.

Quintana tried that yesterday and all it did was Dumoulin closing the gap himself on the climb itself. It doesn't matter if he can't actually hold a gap. He can attack and gain 20 seconds. But then he loses it within 1km. Can't seem to hold pace. And his teammates aren't strong enough to go supersonic

I didn't say he would succeed but what has he to lose to try again even if it didn't work out earlier? Maybe Dumolin will get a small crisis this time. He is unlikely to win the Giro if he leaves everything until the final climb. He basically needs some luck now and that's a way how he could help his luck.

Well Anacona has been the best climbing domestique in the race so far, without a question IMO, so we cannot really blame the team. It has done very well, can't expect any better. Relative to other teams (which honestly all are pretty bad...), its pretty Sky-esque during the Tour.
