Giro 2017, stage 7: Castrovillari - Alberobello 224 KM

Am I the only one who think this sprint was actually the best one of this giro so far?

Yesterday was also good at a much slower pace !

Definitely the most memorable. I can barely remember the stage 5 sprint to be honest, but this one...

On this finish it seemed to be the right thing to do. I doubt any of Ewan, Bennett and Greipel could have held Gaviria if he did that.

That's what sprinting is. Ewan has also been out of luck before today.

Yeah, looked that way to me as well. Maybe Greipel is faster, he got boxed in even more than Gaviria. But that was always going to happen with such a joke of a finish.

In fact, of all the sprints so far, I think only the one Greipel won was a true mano a mano display of power. The others all decided by positioning.

C'mon, that's just not true. Why do people have to go to the extreme all the time? Early on people were saying Ewan was clearly faster, then they said the same about Gav. Neither rider has shown that they're definitively faster than the other at this point, though Gav has shown a bit more versatility. If we're talking about bad luck, Ewan had it on two sprints already this Giro.

To be fair, it's not like Gaviria's sprinting so far in this giro was that great. His win on stage 5 was impressive while he had no serious rivals in his sprint for stage 3 and was pretty bad on stage 2. There isn't really much evidence that Gaviria would have been stronger than Ewan if he head been in his position.

Well I do certainly hope we will find out on the two flat stages left of this race. It may not be the consensus at the moment, but after Gav has got rid of his stomach issues, it all has seemed pretty easy for him (apart from the positioning today, but he was batshit fast once he finally was able to accelerate).

Why? None of these stages will be remembered in a few years. It's been a terrible start to a GT. We're one week in and half the teams in the race haven't attempted to either win a stage or make any GC splits yet.

The high mountain stage was awful, the rolling stages have been soft pedalled and we haven't even had a proper sprint. 1/10 so far.

Yeah, thats what I said dude...

The race has been crap, yeah, but Stage 2 and 5 seemed like pretty regular sprints to me (apart from the Ewan problem). Stage 1 was improved by Postlberger and Stage 3 by etixx. This stage was overly twisty but there is always a finish like this in the Giro, it's almost a tradition, and a fun one at that. We have seen a couple of 'proper' sprints.

I take the Postlberger win over some proper sprinting between Greipel/Ewan/Gaviria anytime.

One thing today re-emphasised my previous thoughts - Greipel struggles in a technical finish and don't follow his wheel.
