Doesn't look like they're going to bridge. Fraile FTW if the break manages to survive somehow.

Annoying Canondale tactics here could ruin things for this break. They should have just tried harder to get a rider in the original break in the first place. I can't blame the break for not wanting to wait up for Rolland now.

The stage reminds me a lot on the 1997 Alpe d'Huez stage.
The climbs themselves are pretty similar and so are the stages, though 1997 was longer. Both stages are flat and just before the actual climb there's an initial climb "pre climb" of about 10kms length with modest gradients that brings the peleton to the bottom of the actual climb.

In 1997 the Alpe d'Huez climb was pure carnage and everybody went flat out right from the begining. There were no "attacks" back then. everybody just rode his pace until he couldn't keep the pace anymore. So much fun to watch.
Today we'll likely see another snoozefest, of course.

Ah been a while since I've seen this tactic. Actually pretty cool, you let our guy in the break or we bring you back.

Only problem is since the chasing team is Cannondale the break may not be too worried. :p

What's the plan?
The trio will hold on under a minute to the breakaway, and the peloton will close all the gaps.

Think Quintana and Nibali will have to take as much time as possible here considering that they will lose as much and probably more time in the next sage's TT. I expect that Quintana could win this by 20-30 secs and go for the time bonus knowing that he will likely only borrow the pink jersey for one day. Either way we should know aa lot more about each rider's credentials after today.
Nibali is a decent time triallist usually. It will have to be a bad day for him or he is starting to decline (rapidly). Quintana isn't as bad a time triallist as people like to make him out to be.

Movistar got pissed of by Cannondale and decided to continue pushing...
Rolland will feel very strange if Movi decides to catch the breakaway.

When Riis did this for Nicky Sorensen in the Tour everyone thought he was a genius. When Cannondale does this tactic they are considdered morons. Even though Cannondale has done some questionable tactics, perhaps that perception has been a bit exagerated. The problem for Cannondale is that on these stages their climbers are simply not good enough to get into the break aways. That should help in the multiclimb-stages. Now they actually succeeded in getting him in there, and if not Quintana wanted to win he would likely win the stage.

Nairito's attack anywhere else than 3 last Giro days would be very surprising

Well, normally I would agree, but why is Movistar working so much today if not for Quintana to win?

Yeah, why so much and why so early?
And the breakaway is packed with climbing specialists
Bluff.

Nairo to attack almost as early as on Alpe d'Huez and to win by at least a minute. That's what i hope for.

I'm very excited concidering the competition with the likes of Kruijswijk, Dumoulin, Mollema, Landa, Thomas, Zakarin, Yates, Pinot, Formolo, Pozzovivo, Nibali, Jungels, maybe even TJVG.

Very tough to call.
