Contador and Porte not to eat gels tomorrow out of sympathy? That's the only fair thing to do.

Cancellara would have neutralized. That's a known fact.

Great win by Gilbert, his classic style of winning! Middle part after Crosara was pretty entertaining too, great Giro :)

Bit of suprised he got to the finisih when Lobato and Matthews struggled, wrong judgement I guess ;)

Gilbert still has that 'champion' look you can recognize in other greats (like Valverde, Boonen, Contador, Tony Martin, etc.). Though not all riders that did great things have that champion aura. Difficult to pinpoint what it is exactly.

About two bike lengths in front of Ulissi and Geschke. Maybe he should have focused on winning a hill classic?
You know it doesn't work that way for the classics which is just a 1 day effort. This stage is different after 2 weeks. It could get worse for the third week. That's why it is a GT and only a few ones can get them. For 1 day efforts it is different and more riders would have the strength of beating Contador.

Great stage, well done Gilbert, silenced a few critics with such a brutal attack.

Has been a very good Giro so far, full of incident and intrigue and some terrific attacking racing. :)

It's an illusion. Those are just guys that have won a lot (in the distant past in the case of Phil and Tom) and made a name for themselves, so there is a sense of familiarity when they win without their win being otherwise remarkable.

Broadly agree. But there's also a bit of confidence to some guys that makes them stand out; they know to act like they been their before even when they haven't. They seem more relieved not to have lost than happy they've won. As opposed to, say Simon Clarke trying to get away with celebrating the "maglia rosa".

Nah, because for example Cavendish doesn't have that champion look in my eyes, even though he won tons of races and was world champion. Also Froome or Gerrans or somesuch - they just don't have 'it'.

In racehorses it is called 'the look of eagles'. Alpha horses Know they are great and project and communicate it via their demeanor. I also believe that some cyclists have it and others not so much even though their palmares are pretty grand.

That's definitely subjective. I think Cavendish has "that look". Like he was meant to be a super-sprinter.

How many riders would you say have the memorable look you are talking about?

contador is not a good person.
to attack like that, to just ride away when it is clear that your opponent is not feeling good, is just plain unsportsmanlike.
it's unfair.
not classy at all.

Can you really compare Tony Martin to real great like Contador or Boonen? He has some TT rainbows and Paris-Nice, but that is hardly prestigious compared to grand tours and monuments.

Completely agreed on that, reminded me a lot of his 2nd Lombardia when he won alone in the rain like a boss. Great outcome of the stage to see 2 of my favourite riders in the first 2 positions! Hopefully Gilbert takes one more :)
Vai Alberto!

Exactly. Now that eventual victory will be hollow since we will never know what had happened if Aru just remembered to eat and felt better.

Gilbert in that desperate sprint against Matthews in Brabantse Pijl 2014 didn't look champion at all.
