Kelly lost 13? minutes in the 83 Tour.

Other than sprinters on the first day in the mountains I can’t think of another blowup that comes close.

Those are some 1985 time gaps.

What a ride this Giro has been by Carapaz. Stage win, top five and finishing 2nd on the hardest stage of the race. Yet he's probably 5th in line GC rider for his team. Crazy.

Basso lost 42' in 2005

Basso wasn't the leader that day. The day he lost the jersey, he finished only 5 minutes back.

I still haven't come up with a bigger loss by the jersey wearer this late in the race than Evans finishing 17 minutes back in 2002.

I just dont understand the Dumoulin fans - first Yates had the race won easily and the question was if it was 4 or 5 minutes. Now its not being able to enjoy such an epic stage cause your favourite didnt win. And on both stages (Sappada and Jafferau), you guys have been expecting Carapaz, Lopez etc. to help Dumoulin out.

I mean, come on. We have witnessed some insane racing, just enjoy it instead of this after every stage that didn't pan out how you wanted

I was being emotionally and mentally drained already, then my heart just shattered into a million pieces seeing Yates' dream disappear like that.

Wow, what a race. This is why we love GT's and the Giro in particular. One-day racing doesn't have the drama and heroism as days like this. I do wonder what would have happened if Dumoulin had not waited for Pinot(after his mechanical) at the top. Carapaz and Lopez would have co-operated in that case I guess. Although I understand Lopez and Carapaz, I believe a stage win would have been possible for them if they all would have worked together.

And, Reichenbach is the worst descender of the peloton.

Pinot proves again that he's overrated. Dumoulin got stuck with the wrong group of riders. Two fighting for the White jersey, one who used up a team mate who was already tired and didn't do much work himself. Then Pinot is the first to attack on the final climb.They should have made more time at least on the valley sections.

Pinot wasn't ridning against Dumoulin or Froome. Tell me, what would Pinot gain by helping Dumoulin in the chase? He would only tire himself and risk losing third place to Lopez.

He's a follower anyway, someone hard to cheer for. Rarely lights up a race. Tactically of course he rode for the podium which he is used to doing and usually fails at. He might hang on tomorrow.

yes i think that is correct.

Reading further: "The time limit, established based on the winner’s time expressed in minute seconds, shall be further rounded off to the successive superior minute."

So that should make it 57 minutes.

In addition: "According to article 2.6.032 of the UCI Regulations, under exceptional circumstances, confirmed accidents or incidents, the Commissaires Panel, after consultation with the Organization Director, may readmit in the race any Rider finishing in a time exceeding the time limit, by increasing the latter by a maximum of 25% of the time set forth in this Article, after cancelling all the points the Rider has earned in each and every classification."

So the Commissaires could conceivably extend the time limit, but it would mean that Viviani, for example, would lose all of his points.

Still, Froome is back into favouritism for now, and even if he doesn't win the Giro, no cycling fan will ever forget stage 19.

Well Froome had never had 3' to make up, who knows what we would have seen over the years if he had been a bad ITTer !

I think what he said was a bit more nuanced than that. He said something like it was important to remind himself not to push too hard and go into the red with all the adrenaline when there was still a long way to go.

Which is kind of a Captain Obvious thing to say, considering that he didn't blow up at the end.
