Especially since he 's had a difficult time the past two years, yes. I'm happy for him. I'm not just talking about the death of Bjorg, but of his health issues which took a while to recover from.
Haven't seen the stage. Before the Giro started, i thought he could do a top 15 in GC if he went for that. Not sure if he's going for stages or for GC though.

Looked like they could have buried him but Nibali and Fuglsang were not willing to work together. The chasing groups made up a lot of ground on the last few meters. Kruijswijk nearly caught them.

The race might be wide open but the top 10 looks pretty set to me already ..took over half the Tour to get to this point. Giro gets to the sharp end very quickly ...no hanging around

Birdsong is more explosive than Nibali, Majka, Pozzovivo and Kruijswijk but doesn't have the team to take bonus seconds.
If anything, there are 3 hilly stages (10, 12, 16) where he could make his trademark hill attack and gain a lot of seconds.
