There was probably an understanding that a group would be let go and the GC guys would take it easy during the long stage, but it got out of hand somehow.

Maybe a crash have caused a split in the peleton?

(I have a feeling the Gazzetta commentators are explaining it now, but I don't speak Italian.:( )

Completely different. It happened to Liquigas on a far harder stage where teammates wouldn't be of much use.

In this stage, domestiques are worth gold.
Androni are NOW dropping back!

I think you must be pressing play & getting a highlight package. The streaming starts by itself (I think, trouble remembering now!)

Iglinksy and Gaspa have also climbed into the broom wagon according to the CN ticker. Carnage out there today, clearly.

Riders are being called back from the break now, I think panic may be starting in the peloton.

Wonder if there was ever a TTT in which almost all the team had already packed?

Something like it could conceivably happen: stage 1 of a GT with a Sky-style whole-team crash on something like the Passage du Gois, or a nine-rider one-fingered salute leading to massive disciplinary action.

Just when ACF thought things couldn't get worse, Cycling Weekly are saying Evans was up all night ill. Maybe he'll even lose time to Vino too.

Maybe explains Santambrogio's retirement too. Dodgy shrimp on the barbie?

Just checked up on the text feed to find out what's happening. This is absolutely crazy, isn't it? That break has to stay away, doesn't it?

How much time can/will they gain by the finish?

Very. Maybe they think one guy won't make much of a difference so he's got free reign to go for the stage?

He's in good shape.

EDIT: Now he sits up too

10 minutes would set things up nicely.
