There was probably an understanding that a group would be let go and the GC guys would take it easy during the long stage, but it got out of hand somehow.

Maybe a crash have caused a split in the peleton?

(I have a feeling the Gazzetta commentators are explaining it now, but I don't speak Italian. )

Completely different. It happened to Liquigas on a far harder stage where teammates wouldn't be of much use.

In this stage, domestiques are worth gold.

I think you must be pressing play & getting a highlight package. The streaming starts by itself (I think, trouble remembering now!)
