Just saw the gap at 15:36 on screen.

Liquigas: with two leaders, all you have to do is put one in the break and he doesn't have to worry about Vino or Evans anymore. Mind you Basso or Nibali wouldn't be allowed to go probably. Even if Arroyo, Porte, Sastre were. How did they let Sastre go? Must have escaped their attention.

Brent Bookwalter (BMC Racing Team) and Alessandro Binotti (Liquigas-Doimo) have also sat up.

Yeah, I edited later.

Also: "Binotti" :D

EDIT:

Just checked up on the text feed to find out what's happening. This is absolutely crazy, isn't it? That break has to stay away, doesn't it?

How much time can/will they gain by the finish?

I don't think it will be that bad by the end. At least I hope it won't be. I would not be surprised to see Sastre get shelled by the break. Arroyo and Tondo will be pushing hard, though.

And will they all work together well?

Well, given they have 15 minutes now and the parcours for the final 100k, I'd say 10 minutes was realistic for Sastre, Wiggins etc. At some point the chasers will get tired and Vino/Cuddles will probably have to take it on themselves in the last 40k or so, so expecting them to claw back much more than 5 minutes is asking a lot. I'd even say getting 5 minutes back in 100k is looking unlikely at the moment.

re pereiro deja vu, it could apply with vino!

hypothetically, if evans gets pink, i don't see who will be still with him after the first climb?

The "peleton" is now smaller than the "break"

If they are not careful they could burn themselves out now and start losing time again before the finish, they need to stay calm and ride steady.

I have to ask one more of my newbie questions - is this situation good for the race? will this 'kill' the race, with vinokourov, basso and all the other GC riders so far behind?
sorry if the question is stupid :)

just to add while i'm here, loved giro so far, really interesting race

With so many riders from the GC mens teams sitting up i can only think a deal must have been made

Maybe, but I find this pretty hilarious. How, for example, did Cervelo end up with four riders in a huge break? Or Caisse with five? That is crazy.
