I have to ask one more of my newbie questions - is this situation good for the race? will this 'kill' the race, with vinokourov, basso and all the other GC riders so far behind?
sorry if the question is stupid :)

just to add while i'm here, loved giro so far, really interesting race

if the gc contenders lose about 8 to 10 minutes, its good for the race. anything more it is bad as it closes it imo.

Can someone "do the math" (not me, I'm crap) and tell us how the GC might look with, let's say, 10 minutes over the peloton by the finish?

I hope 12 minutes, means everyone has to attack. :D

Astana are driving the peloton, which has split into two groups under the pressure of the Kazakhstani team. That's not an encouraging sign for the chasers as they'll need plenty of help if they want to make inroads into the gap.

Not stupid at all. Basically, all you want is at least a handful of contenders left in week 3. If this break stays ahead with a well enough margin guys like Wiggins and Sastre are back amongst the living, guys like Arroyo, Tondo and Kiserlovski are at the front and Evans, Vino, Basso and Nibali will have to attack later to get time back. As long as the differences don't get too big and there's enough guys left to fight, it's all good.

Do your own math(s!)!

Ok,I will: with 10 minutes, that's the new GC down to Sastre, with Vino just below him. Sastre and Wiggins borderline relative to Vino. Evans would be just below Bakelandts, right?
