I thought Machado would be a contender. He finished over 3 minutes down today.

just like italians say,la corsa non e finita.we didn't see nothing to compare the contenders on the climbs.i don't say that rujano or machado will be back in the business but it might happen.we just have to wait etna.but more and more,my feeling is that alberto will do a verbier, full gas in the first MTF putting 2 minutes to the second rider.than he will wait for the ITTs.it's very possible.

Favorites were too afraid to do anything, can't wait till the real stages begin.
didn't look like Scarponi was afraid of anything. But the last hill wasn't hard enough, the steep part lasted too short.

And you know favorites are never going to try something 40km before the finish line. Or waiste any power before the last climb. That's why I'm glad none of the favs won today.

Also, I don't like the Belgian press at the moment.

Both Sporza.be with their suggestive "Many didn't like that Pieter Weening cheered so happily at the finish line" and HLN with their "Giro course is too dangerous"

They just repeat what Karl Vannieuwkerke said and appearently that should be the opinion of whole Belgium.

In dutch we call this "stemmingmakerij". They are handling thigns pretty poorly tbh.

Meh, wasn't a real powerful attack by Scarponi. Stopped right away when he saw Contador was in his wheel.

But yeah the final 500 meters or so where easy.

Rabo has made his injuries public. A broken eyesocket and a concussion. He is held tonight in the hospital for observation

Thanks. Sounds nasty, but as we know things can be a lot worse. Wish him a speedy recovery.

Well, the Giro course is pretty dangerous. Weylandt's crash could of course have happened at any race with a descend in it, but it's not his death that made this course dangerous, it's the course. Is it too dangerous? I don't know, but it's pretty dangerous. That rabo rider's crash was pretty bad as well and I think there will be many more bad crashes to come. Zomegan surely will get criticizes for this.

And to be honest, I thought it was a bit of a **** move to be cheering like that on the finish line and podium, but perhaps it just wasn't on his mind in the heath of the moment. It's no big deal at all. But if it was Contador that did that people would be all over him right now...

Haha. Good on you, DT. I don't know who could fail to celebrate such a finish, when a guy hangs it all out like that, against all expectations, dies in the pedals in the big gear and then holds it together to pull off the win. !!!!!

The most important thing is that optic nerve isn't damaged.

I think that He will try but won't have a BIG gap... Scarponi is really in form looking sooo sharp an eager to attack as We saw today... The same for Il Squalo as We saw today in the descent!

You mean when Lövkvist came back. Scarponi had 3 bike lengths at some point...
Contador was only in his wheel when Lövkvist brought the group back

Totally agree. All they did on Flemish television today was whining. About the course, about the organisation, about how Weening passed the finnish line,...

Like I said: I might try dutch Eurosport tomorow...

Yeah, because Scarponi fears Lofkvist for the GC.

ya a guy goes through hell and gets one of the most important victories of his life and is not supposed to celebrate just because a sad tragedy happened a few days before. the peloton paid their respects yesterday.

weening the right thing celebrating and being overjoyed one of the best moments of his life

also the crash today happened on a flat section . . . this "dangerous course" talk is really getting annoying/on my nerves

No, this time it's their soigneur who brings down another team's rider. Thank you, Euskaltel.
Yeah, the uniforms are really blending this year (if even the soigneurs can't tell them apart), it hadn't occurred to me that it could create safety issues.

During the WW tribute, it seemed that Farrar's Cervelo kit was almost indistinguishable from the Leopard kit, even in close ups.

If I'm not going to be sharper with my observations sometimes, I'll be at the mercy of the TV commentators! heh, spectator hell :)

That could be pretty serious but I was really worried he had a spinal injury when they didn't move him for so long.

Great stage as expected. I don't understand any criticism of the winner being happy and celebrating.

that was hardcore to watch--Scarponi seemed quite aware of things when Vincenzo took off-he had to go too.

To me AFA teams go- Liqui-Lampre & Geox are putting pressure on Saxo big time with those sort of pulls in pace- even Euskaltel have Anton & Nieve there in contention-so more exiting racing is ahead indeed.

Nibali's descend seemed like a waste of energy to me.

Nah, he wasn't trying hard at all. He took it easy, but he's a world class bike-handler and it showed.

I think you were looking at a different descend. He was trying very hard.

I don't see it happening. Verbier was in the final week of the TdF. He may ride with whoever attacks and try to put distance between himself and others, but I don't think he (or more likely Riis) wants to defend the maglia rosa at this point.

I don't think it's fair or realistic to think that yesterday would have even crossed a racer's mind as that finish was unfolding. Unless you had mentally rehearsed your victory moment - and that didn't look rehearsed.
I don't know about the podium, but at least someone said he dedicated the win later.

Alberto was good tactically today... He didnt cover any attack just follow... didnt waste any energies today...

It was... but I think that He was just testing the field today... and checking his legs...

BTW Jackson Rodriguez (Venezuela) from Androni punctured and had a crash today... various "points" in his arm... but He can continue...
