I ride the strade a lot and the only issues really are the flint chunks in the limestone.. Punctures yadda yadda.. It's far better to ride it when it's wet as the stuff gets pushed into the road rather than in the dry where it sits proud and punctures..

Now now, Sastre will I'm sure be on the front... of his own pack hahaha, someone did say he's borrowing his kids plastic tractor to smooth the dirt for the rest of the bunch... I think it's got a Fuji sticker on it...

Anton..hmm neat choice, forgot he was in it this year

I think A. Schleck will try win doubly hard at the tour, that would be a fitting tribute.

I shall say Millar will hold on unless pineau gains enough time. Expect to see SBS doing tempo again. Porte is seeming to be stronger however it's worrying about navarro and hernandez, fingers crossed they can gather form before Etna. I think protagonists will be Tschopp, Pineau and some other rider. I expect to also see riders like Minguez putting in a good ride for Anton and Moreno for Rodriguez.

I disagree, I think Schleck would put in his all no matter what at the tour de france.

btw, KM12 - Martin Kohler (BMC) has attacked.

Montalcino stage from 2010 - Just thought I'd post it because it was such a beautiful, spectacular stage. I know how much people enjoyed it and thought you may want to look back on it. The link is to part 3/5 which continues on to parts 4 and 5 of the stage.

One is a pure climber and the other one is as punchy as it gets? :p

They're really not the same caliber. Besides, as you say, a "mini Giro di Lombardia". Thus the climbing will be easier favoring punchy riders even more :p

Someone like Ballan and Cunego are more of Gilbert's caliber(even though they don't come near his abilities), but they could sprint in the end for victory.
Scarponi is stronger than both Ballan and Cunego. And he's very punchy, I don't know where you got the idea that he isn't.

I hope BMC finally gets into a break, thats what they need to do. they tried with wyss and kohler on stage3 but the break was taken back.

In other news, the Giro is sending officials to the Monte Crostis to reevaluate the descent. Climb might get skipped if they find the downhill 'too dangerous'

that's not going to happen. just a pleaser to all the hypocrite whiners, especially in the belgian media, using weylandts death for this.

Cause the dude's no sprinter and he ain't gonna drop his GT rivals on these hills barring accidents. He's not more punchy than some other top favorites for this Giro.

The win will either be from a small breakaway group or a group of favorites sprinting for the victory. And Scarponi will be marked.

I really fail to see how Scarponi compares more to a Gilbert type of rider than Ballan and Cunego lol.

Poor, poor Martin Kohler. He is today's Sebastian Lang. (although it will probably be over for him after 100 k rather than 200)

They'll let him have a big gap I think. Martin has some good form. Hopefully he does well.

The only gain i think he can get out of this is some mountain points.

Watching Scarponi's "sprint" in the Giro dell Emilia last year doesn't give much hope :p he needs to get rid of them if he wants to win

The gravel sections weren't the decider in that race. The length and gradient of the last climbs today will be the relevant factors.

Yes and that is a good thing. They are having a go as if you don't try you are never going to win. Don't be so negative.

Lelangue has said he has 6'50

Well, the length and gradient of the last climb was the decisive factor as well in Montepaschi Strade Bianche.

I'm not saying he's more like Gilbert than those guys, I'm not saying he has a great sprint either, I'm just saying he's punchy. If you need examples of that, there are plenty. Look them up.

i fully agree...both in being punchier and a better overall climber.

in fact, i was a bit surprized by ekimov's recognition of the very fact and even
predicting that scarponi will be the main rival to contador, ahead of others..

On a lesser gardient I would say ballan is quicker. Ballan is clearly better than Scarponi on cobbles.

I don't think Scarponi will be AC's main rival. I think Nibali, Menchov and Rodriguez are ahead of him on my list of threats.
