That looks like a very decent pre season race.

Has their been highlights of the race in the past?
Not too bad, the Kinglake circuit looks decent but that transfer to Wangaratta is long. They could have been a touch more creative with one or two stages though. Interested to see how Falls Creek is raced, shame the race is in January, I'd love to see them climb the other side, leaving from Dinner Plains or even Harrietville

Instead of Dinner Plain or Harrietville just start it in Mt Beauty and cross Tawonga then head up Hotham and then get spanked by BOF, now that would be one proper challenging route :D

The transfer to Wang is a bit rough considering the Prolouge is usually held in the late afternoon/early evening being daylight saving time and being held basically in the centre of the Melbourne, they were never going to drop the Prolouge seeing as some of the funding of this event comes from the Major Events budget and the head office of The Herald Scum in on Southbank.
I like that the prologue is right in Southbank, all they needed to do is have a transition stage on the way to Wangaratta, instead of just having them on the way back. It would also save having most of the meaningful action in the prologue and first stage.

Ian Bibby from JLT Condor wins Bay Crit 1, Ewan went down on the final corner. Didn't see the actual incident on the live coverage.

Is there a livestream (also for the next stages)? Or is it on Aussie TV

Go through cyclingfans website - Race is live streamed through Facebook - Coverage was OK but somehow the coverage missed one corner ( where the crash occurred ) on a 740m circuit - Posted months ago that Ewan shouldn't be wasting time on Bay Crits - It serves no purpose.

Actually the timing is perfect for someone looking to peak for nationals and sprints at the TDU.

It's a training run, it's fine as long as you don't get hurt. Either way until he's an M-SR/G-W/Scheldeprijs contender there's no point having a more traditional (slower) start to the season. Plenty of time to bag some wins in Jan/Feb and reboot for the Giro.

At the end of the day, Orica chose to retain Ewan over Matthews, so he's seen as a valuable commodity - Riding 60km criterium' is not the way to go - As we saw today the race can be won in different ways as evidenced by Hepburn.

Would Orica be the only WT team yet to announce their GC contender's for the giro and the TDF. The team is usually very precious with the information.

Umm, Orica wanted to retain Matthews. It's just that with Chaves, 2 x Yates, Kreuziger, Plaza, Gerrans, Hayman, Impey and now Howson, Verona, Ewan and Cort something had to give. Their budget isn't endless and Matthews can quite rightly command a solid salary. He's probably the one big rider there that the rest of the squad can make up for.

It's also probably more of a binary between Matthews and Gerrans given the similarities in riders and pay.

And Gerrans is still going to peak for the TDU

But both his monuments were in TDU winning years! Even the early monument! Kind of puts to rest the notion that you can't be competitive in Spring if you train hard in January (indeed you may say it's essential).
