Apparently Porte is targetting GC at the TDU - My expectation is only a few teams will target GC - Sprints could be exciting with Ewan, Sagan and Greipel and possibly Quick Step will send Viviani.

Porte will probably stick to the schedule that worked well for him last year. The only difference is that he also wants to ride the Vuelta which is a bit odd. Maybe he thinks that is his best prep for the Worlds Road Race. But you would think with the later finish to the season he would forego the nationals and the TDU but I guess that he and BMC won't knock some points early in the season and he gets to avoid the European winter for a bit longer.

My understanding is it's a BMC decision for Porte to ride the Vuelta - Richie can struggle in prolonged hot conditions, so I'm not expecting much from him at the Vuelta - Believe he is only riding the ITT at the National's.

Lotto NL Jumbo have released their provisional team for the TDU - Gesink, Bennett, Leese, Lobato, Boom, Wagner and Olivier - Gesink or Bennett could be competitive for GC if in decent shape.
BMC squad for the TDU is strong - Porte, gerrans, Dennis, Scotson, Wyss, Bevin and Bohli - Favorites for the GC.

As expected Viviani to ride the TDU - It's a decent sprint field with Ewan, Sagan, Greipel and Viviani so far confirmed.

I suppose it's good for the Aussies to support their home race even though I think Porte could do better later in the year if he dodged the Australian races and had a later start to the season. The later approach paid off for Evans and could be better for Porte in the final week of the Tour but I suppose a block of racing in Australia over two weeks or so in good weather is better than training in the cold in Europe and BMC like to pick up points in the TDU. Because Porte never got to the final week of the Tour last year we will never know if his great form was going to hold.

Australian Road Race Titles begin this week - Orica has 9 in the men's RR, except for Jack Haig ( who is doing a Michael Matthews ), BMC has four strong riders and Team Sunweb has three or four riders - Men's RR is usually unpredictable with an even split of wins coming from the breakaway or the peleton - Durbridge could win if he brings his 2017 performance, though if Dennis puts it together he is my favorite.
Men's TT should be a battle between Dennis, Porte and Durbridge with Dennis the undoubted favourite.
Men's criterium should see a win to Orica - They have multiple options in Ewan, Meyer or Edmondson who can win.
The women's RR takes on a different dimension with Garfoot leaving Orica - Spratt, Kennedy or Roy will be hard to beat, though there will be strong opposition from the types of Garfoot, Cromwell, Gillow, Neylan and the like - This is an open race.

I'll be in the Chief Comm's car for this year's edition of the Nationals. It's always an interesting perspective viewing the race from there.
WIth all that changes last year, is TDU still a obligatory world tour race for all the World Tour Teams?

Given that it has been an existing WT race for some years, rather than a new addition; it would remain as such (as was the case for 2017 - the first year with the "mass influx" of new races) unless there has been a very recent rules change by UCI with regards to minimum number of WT teams.

The main thing this year is for a Non-Australian to win a stage - It's been 2015 since this happened.

Who is going to challenge him? You need someone like Alaphilippe, Valverde or Dan Martin to put him under pressure.

I think Sagan and Matthews have a better chance of challenging for the overall than the climbers.
