Il Lombardia 2024, one day monument, October 12, farewell to Domenico Pozzovivo

Tour of Lombardy this year again on Sporza

Finally its here. No prizes for guessing the winner. Maybe we should predict when he will attack ?

Pogacar won his world title with a 100km attack. But he doesn't need to go that early. Colma di Sormano looks perfect in length and placement. Then if there are any pretenders left in contention he can dust them off on San Fermo della Battaglia.

So Il Lombardia is around the corner! Beautiful roads near Lago di Como and historical circumstances.

Pogacar, who's the clear favourite here, is fighting for his 4th consecutive victory (tying with Coppi) and for 5th major win of the season (which also includes Tour+Giro double, WC and Liege), which would probably make it the best season ever (even vs Merckx's 1971 or 1972).

The fact that Tre Valli was cancelled is actually favorable for Pogacar, who will now save more matches for Saturday instead of burning them in terrible weather. My prediction hasn't changed: Pogacar will attack around 50 km from the line halfway through Sormano. Is anyone able to at least limit the damage and catch him later? Mas is in form, Evenepoel and Roglic may be fading already but they will try their best in climbers monuments for sure. We will see, either way Pogacar would still be favored in the final sprint.

And last but not least. Como area is beautiful, it's like a fjord in the Alps. I hiked in those nearby mountains in the spring.

I think Pogacar does it on purpose. At the world champs everybody said he'll attack with 2 laps to go. So he made it with 4 laps to go. Giro dell Emilia same thing, everyone predicted with 2 laps to go, he attacked with 4 laps to go.

So probably Pogacar won't attack on Colma di Sormano and rather on Madona die Ghisallo, just because nobody expects it then? But who expects anything anymore with Pog.

2014-2020 is probably the greatest collection of winners for this race imaginable, can't think of any other winners list that features so many true cyclismo hall of fame legends.

And then from 2021 this beautiful race has gotten into the stranglehold and become the bore show of the fecking Slovenian Pozatto, we are truly living in the darkest of all times. Masnada was our last hope before the darkness arrived.

The true is that super-long rangers are always more risky, even in case of Pogacar. There's no way around physics, aerodynamic drag is a huge factor. I haven't changed my mind and still think that his WC attack was a considerable risk. OTOH if he attacks 40-50 km from the line he can push his crazy Z4 power most of the time (except descends), which annihilates depleted field in most cases.

Every pre race he's in reduced to a "where will he launch his solo" guessing game. Side talk is what record there is to break today.

I can count myself lucky I liked Pogacar from the start, and I think I still do. If I didn't maybe I'd stopped watching cycling - at least for awhile - like I did after Froome - Porte demolition combo and Visma won few races in a row and pick winner at will. It's hard to be objective as sport fan. But even so, maybe I'll get to that point too with him, even that I like him, he's dominant in the extreme even the race for second felt done by broken people.

Nothing cycling needs more than a reeled-in Pog's solo, fantasy stuffs like that.

But if this fantasy becomes reality, how will half of the forum who are now "done with this sport" ever know about it?

Slovenian Pozzato? What?

Oh, come on. Fausto will want to beat Teddy Merckx on the road while you are such a loser!
I hope that Fausto won't want to literally beat Teddy on the road or at least that @Ilmaestro99 won't take it serious and decide to do it himself 😃.

Few years later Fausto remains one of the very few cyclists able to catch Pogacar after he went solo and had a (decent) gap though.

Pretty much. His lap times were gettimg worse rapidly.

Here in Lombardia literally nothing other than Sormano makes sense. Anything before would just be historic arrogance

Doesn’t really change much if the ones who reel him in are the others who are always winning, Roglic or Remco. Needs to be one of the top 15 favs
