I want to see someone go all Ricco 2008 on this race and judging by form, Zakarin looks like the most likely candidate.

There is one significant difference between the two, which means Zakarin can never go all Ricco. The Cobra looked like a god on the bike, and the less said about Zakarin's style, the better.

I don't think he had to go today. There is a ITT tomorrow, where he is good at.Plus becuase of the sterrato and descent he didn' take any risk.
And lol at comparing him to Leipheimer.

He has attacked in Arrate,Champex-Lac,Imola and Finestre last year.
This year he attacked at Morgins and Roccaraso as well.Though his win at Madone d'Utelle was hilarious, just coming from the back and pipping Thomas.

He was in the breakaway a few times last year. He followed Dumoulin's attack at Roccaraso. And he rarely cooperates in groups larger than 2

Yeah.He attacked in Imola to win the stage though. Also didn't he work on Finestre, leading Landa?
And yeah he can be a bit annoying sometimes but he is not Lepiheimer in my opinion.
Edit:He was also very aggressive on L-B-L this year.

will he outmenchov Menchov?

Haha, these are all good

Good to have Landa and him at once in one GT, like going to a double bill of slasher movies, Btw, I still can see a possibility he'll do worse than expected in the TT without necessarily fading from contention come the mountain.

It's a wonder how he has managed to be a good TTer in the past considering how unstable he looks like on the bike. We'll see soon enough, but I don't think tomorrow's course is well suited to his style.

seems like many here didn't see leipheimer racing.
A powerful time trialist, but never too far from the front in the mountains. If he'd been in a different team, he would've probably won the 2008 Vuelta.

Horrible day for Zakarin :( Out of top 10 after this TT he seems to follow the same road as Porte last year.

Nah, The Tatar Terror isn't going to be cowed by a single bad day. If anything he needs another bad day or two to give us some beast mode 2008 Sella mountaineering. Zakarin is the new Vino (albeit actually more like Kash), a late arrival at the top table who's good but not the greatest at most skills (albeit much more ungainly than Vino), aggressive, and blessed with a complete void where most people's ability to give a damn is.

He is not much more than a minute behind Nibbles. He is still in this Giro in a massive way. Nibbles and Landa have both showed cracks in their climbing in the first week, It wouldnt surprise me in the slightest if Zakarin put big time into one or both of them once we get to a proper mountain stage.

Even with the crashes the GC battle was basically netralised by the weather during the TT. Nibbles, Valverde, Landa, Zakarin, Majka & Kruijswijk all within 1:20min of each other with the proper TTs over and done with. This Giro will be won by whoever is the best Climber.....

Hopefully he's not that hurt after today's clown show and will fly in the mountains.
I think he was the clown, really.
Bike-handling is part of being a top-cyclist.

Yeah, it isn't over jet.
The ITT was brutal, I was getting Rasmussen 2005 flashbacks, I felt sorry for him. :(
He's a hardman who was raised in the open steppe of Tatarstan and loves really bad weather, he'll fight back.

Not looking great today. Hopefully not the first signs of peaking too early..

Yeah, he didn't look all to great but he races smartly and doesn't try to respond to attacks immediately, a bit like Froome on a good day (I like to think of Zakarin as a cooler Russian Froome)

Zakarin combines the elegant style of Froome with the bike handling skills of Menchov
