I want to see someone go all Ricco 2008 on this race and judging by form, Zakarin looks like the most likely candidate.

There is one significant difference between the two, which means Zakarin can never go all Ricco. The Cobra looked like a god on the bike, and the less said about Zakarin's style, the better.
It hasn't stopped Froome since the 2011 Vuelta

Some bad luck today as he had to stop and change bikes and wait for a bit after Kruijswijk/Chaves attacked, says he thinks he could have got across to Nibali but did manage to catch up to Majka and Uran at least.

Given there was no coverage at all of /Majka/Uran/Him after the aforementioned attack it's hard to know exactly how much it cost him.

He was already suffering to hold the wheels of Majka and Uran, so they might exaggerate a bit.

He was in the breakaway a few times last year. He followed Dumoulin's attack at Roccaraso. And he rarely cooperates in groups larger than 2

Right. Imma take this statement, and shove them up my butt.

You happy now?

He was a beast today. Attacking with 75 km's to go and doing all the work for the front trio. I think he will podium, perhaps even finish second.

Monster of a ride by Zakarin. The last few kms stretched out the lead a lot more with him doing all of the work and of course Valverde finished it off as expected but the three of them worked well together for most of the break.

Early days still but what do we think about Zakarin as a GT rider going forward? How does he compare to other aspiring young talents like Aru, Pinot, Landa, Little Richie?

I don't think he's as aspiring as Little Richie.

He is the new Kashechkin. bellow the best at climbing and TT, but always puts up a fight!

So i dont really know who i would compare him to from todays riders.

Nah, he aint, he still has to net a GT podium, when he does i can agree.

For the record i think he will do it this giro.

Podium counting is not a good way of looking his potential as GT rider going forward, because that's subject to things like luck or bike handling skills that may not always be as important. It's better to look at whether he can climb, tt and recover consistently with the best, and it's now starting to look like he can, whether he ends up on the podium or not.

I think he's surpassed Majka in terms of what we can expect him to do at GTs.

Well if he finishes the race that puts him ahead of Richie ! Zakarin has time on his side but he's definitely a talent. In the short term I can't see him winning a GT mainly due to the opposition he has to beat. I hope Porte turns up at the Tour in good health and I think racing against Froome might motivate him. I think he will have an impact at the Tour and the move to BMC was a good one. He can TT and climb well and I would like to see him put it together over three weeks. Even if he does not podium he needs to ride a strong race if he is ever going to convince people he is actually a GT rider who can compete with the best.

So?
Horner was an aspiring young talent in his mid 30s.
