Do you even follow Italian team selection? You know you are not Mr Know it all, sometimes keep your mouth shut is not a bad idea when people are discussing something you have no knowledge of.

lol you didn't know Basso wasn't selected either

he will be a workhorse if selected into the team, so it doesn't matter he has more or less miles in his legs

hillarious.

Not sure what you meant by -"you are not mr know it all" but usually it means - "I have no argument nor any debating skills so will just throw in a cheap ad hominem that has nothing to do with the discussion to save face."

Yep, reading the post again, its clear thats what you meant. Try to discuss cycling not the poster next time.

Maybe he was concerned about getting dropped on the descent so didnt want to put on a cape, or stop or slow down for a cape, etc?

After a perineal cyst ruled him out of the Giro d’Italia on the eve of the race, Basso returned to some form at the Vuelta a España only to abandon in the Pyrenees due to effect of hypothermia. Basso is hoping for better in 2014, and plans to tackle two Grand Tours – “I don’t know which ones yet” – but acknowledged that overall victory might well be beyond him.

“In all honesty, if the strongest guys in the world, like Froome and Nibali, are all there on the start line at a Grand Tour, then I’m not on the same level. I can fight for a place in the top 5 but not for the overall win. But when they’re not all there, I can still be up there with the best. And the beauty of cycling is that it’s not mathematical: if you’re up there with the best at all, then you have a good chance to seize the moment.”

That said, and although he turns 36 years old next week, Basso was reluctant to draw on Chris Horner’s improbable Vuelta victory for inspiration. “Horner won at 42 years of age? Good for him, he’s crowned his career. But just because he’s won at 42 years of age doesn’t mean that we’ll all go on that long.”

The hope for 2014 has begun. Hell yeah!

you can fight for overall, ivan!trust me, you can!

He'd have won the Vuelta 2013 for sure if not for that damn freezing day. Best form ever since Giro 2010.

The fix is wrong dude. He was a frackin' BEAST at the Vuelta.

At least he looked like Basso looks when he is waiting for tougher terrain to do the beast thing, i thought he was going to podium for sure, i'm not sure what would have happened between him and Horner, but i don't think they would have been able to gap each other by big margins.

If you consider being able to keep up (for the first time in a long time) beast-like, then fair enough.

I love Basso the man is a legend he would have dominated 07,08,09 no doubt about, maybe not 09 Contador was no mug then but cant see Contador of those first 2 years 07, 08 would live with Basso he was heading into a real dominant reign, who agrees? Yes we all no what that era was like but who ever thinks what could have been in 06, how we never got to see Basso V Ullrich breaks me to this day(im a huge Ullrich fanboy by the way).

The Vuelta he actually showed some real great signs to me he just could not get clear and when Nibali went after Horner that stage were Horner won by 48 seconds Basso decided he was not going to do all the chasing they wheelscuked him, Valverde:eek: and Purito:eek:. He was waiting for Galiber to drop Mr Big gear im sure of that, we all know Basso at good shape was/is better than Nibali and Nibali was little off(look at his small gap to the TDF guys). I think Basso gets 3rd behind Quintana and Porte in the Giro unless Froome turns out of course.:D

I think we're gonna see the strongest Basso of the last 3 years thuis season. He was really strong at the end of last season and now he's building easily up to the Giro. I expect him to be real good at first in Catalunya and maybe a top5 in the Giro.

I haven't seen anything from todays prologue, but Ivans time seems promising.

Of course i'd love to cheer for him at the Giro.

That's what I think as well.
Riding into form just in time.

I guess his times as a contender for the win are over, but the Giro is backloaded enough to let him peak at the right moment. He'll kill em all on Zoncolan :D

Old Man Basso says: the race isn't over until the fat lady sings.

Haven't seen him looking that bad on a bike before. His upper body is moving like Voight lately.

Hope he comes back, but...:(

With age Basso tries to emulate Horners style on the bike. Standing all the way :(
