Great to see Basso take it to the rest yesterday. Set's it up nicely for those tough stages to come. Every chance he can podium this year.

Sad to see Basso abandon today. He has been riding well. And I think he could have ended up in top 5 or maybe even podium if he hadn't left the race.

What are the longer term effects of hypothermia going to be? He can still do Worlds and Lombardy right? If so I wouldn't rule him out for top 10's.

I should think so, it has to be mild hypothermia he suffered, so he should be up and about rather soon.

It might work to his advantage because he'll have less kms in his legs from VUelta in worlds, but he's still in very good form

he will be a workhorse if selected into the team, so it doesn't matter he has more or less miles in his legs

Have you ever seen the world championships before?

It seems a lot of people have not because they expect every single rider who isn't a team leader to be a workhorse.

As if we will have 150 riders on the front simultaneously and then 10 leaders behind them in the massive slipstream.

Sort of like Alexander's formation at Gaugamela.

Disappointing for Basso. Thought he was in for a good shot at the podium.

I doubt he would perform well at the World's. Has he ever had many good results in one day races?

But we can always begin to discuss his assault on the Giro next year. At least this Vuelta showed that he can still ride at a GC GT level.

Basso has had a few very good 1 day results, and with the exception of GP Lugano, they have all been in Autumn, and most in Italy.

A 1 day race in Autumn in Firenze with 5000m of ascent or whatever it was, would suit him very very well.

Do you even follow Italian team selection? You know you are not Mr Know it all, sometimes keep your mouth shut is not a bad idea when people are discussing something you have no knowledge of.

Doesn't seem he has the explosiveness in the legs to be able to win the one day classics. Could be wrong though?

I expect that he will win at least Milano-Torino and Lombardia.
He would have to do some descend training to have a chance to win Lombardia.

He has multiple top20 placements in Lombardia. He was on the podium during his best years and recently 4th if I'm not mistaken. If the weather is all right he has a chance, considering how fresh he will be compared to most other contenders

I know he has done well, but to win it he needs to arrive alone, and I doubt he can hold many behind on the descent when he doesn't have a wheel to follow.

I'm sure he could top-5 or podium, but a win is close to impossible IMO.

crazy day, and while i can see why he pulled out maybe thats difference that he needed to win a tour when he failed that extra madness.
