A couple of minutes after the stage ended, i started to realise what i have witnessed.

The end of the great Ivan Basso. The end of the Armstrong/Ullrich/Kloden/Mancebo era. Period for now. It makes me sad:(

You still have Evans and Valverde.

Or, the beginning fo the Quintana/Aru/Kelderman/etc. period, either way it's about time, though I do miss Vino and Ullrich.

I didn't see them race against those guys in the Tour of 2004.

Yeah in 2005. But the one wasn't a serious contender at all (Evans), the other rider abanonded (which was sad, after his great showing of Courchevel)

Ironically I was reading this week -Pro cycling magazine, I think- which featured him & he claimed to still have 3 more years in him to be competitive- although he recognizes he's fading & is ready to support a leader if the team sees it be ....

Really? Before the Giro, he said he's really in doubt wether or not he will continue. I don't think this Giro will make his decision any easier (or will actually).

In the next 3 years, he will be competitive ... for a team leader. He's lucky he is in a team without a serious GC contender. In any other team, he already would be a domestique.

I suppose Formulo is Cannondale's big GC (or at least climbing) hope for the future. At the present they've got nothing

Valverde crashed out with a broken collarbone yes? He was Really looking good too! He was already on my Favs list and I was hoping he would take down LA.

Very sad to see Basso riding like this; turning himself inside out and still failing. It's time to either hang up the wheels or become a superdom which is beneath him IMO. But hey Samu is doing it, so if he wants to ride next year it might be the route to take.

Like Samu if he wants to stay at this level then that's the route he must take. It's sad to see such stars fall but we have some great new stars taking over! I will always remember how friendly Ivan and Samu were at the Tour of Britain 2 years ago, happy to chat and sign my programme. Top gentlemen.

He should retire.
I believed he could leave a mark on this Giro, even if for one stage only. But he's got nothing left. I don't wanna see him doing domestique duties for another team. Call it a career at the end of the season. That's it.

It was so heartbreaking for me to see the once great RoboBasso try to put his heart beyond his actual physical limits.
Cassani told that when he held the meeting with the Squadra Azzurra, Basso was always the first to go training, always the first to pull, always the first to sprint. He's definitely one hell of a professional rider: is this his swan song?

:(

Watching him struggle to bridge to the break yesterday, and how obviously futile it was... that was painful. I'm sure he could be a trustworthy dom for a couple of years, but for who?

I dunno, something doesn't add up. Is he doing the Tour? If he's got another two year deal in him maybe he decided just to chill this year. It's. Not. Over.

Agree, depends if he needs money or not which I assume he doesn't likely due to his calm friendly nature he has a future in cycling outside of riding if he wants it.

Well he hasn't! He's going to go dom for Alberto :) Hopefully he is rejuvenated and gets a few results for himself as well!
