Jennie Longo pulls a Rasmussen

Inrng reports that Longo got off on a technicality (of course). Discrepancy between French law and the WADA/UCI guidelines.

The FFC followed guidelines set by the UCI and WADA over naming Longo in their “testing pool” of athletes who are subject to regular monitoring and surprise controls. Under the rules once an athlete is named, they are in this pool until further notice. It could mean a decade if they have a long career and in the case of Longo, the most evergreen of athletes, even longer.

But those are the rules and French law is different. An amendment to Article L.232-15 of the Code du Sport, 2010-379 on 14 avril 2010 requires a sports body in France to inform the athlete concerned that they are in the testing pool every year, to send a letter confirming their status. It seems the FFC did not do this, thus under the law Longo was not notified that she was in the pool. Therefore under the law Longo was no longer subject to the testing. She could not miss a test since she was no longer considered to be in the pool.

L'Equipe now has more:
Les motivations de la décision

Basically confirms in longhand what inrng says above. The change from being part of a testing target group for an indeterminate period (i.e. for the whole career length) to an annual, rollover situation without notice means that Longo, who was not notified of the change, could not have been part of that new target group.

Luckily, there are the Papp docs...somewhere... :)

It does not seem the French are interested otherwise why have they not done something about it?

what a great day for bike racing. The federation looked at it's notification process and saw how completely dumb it was. The top rider in the federation training in the mountains of Colorado and a test or notification of a test was missed because of multiple errors. Rather than subject the entire system of rider that didn't need to have a contact number or cell phone before she was to compete in the Worlds and possible Olympian and the federation coach and other officials not saying check in ever couple of days they logged this one in as a complete cluster f-ck.

The Papp smear came back negative in the French feds lab also. 1 less guilty even though everything indicated that it was a sure thing. Yet another reason that Armstrong should see the process through to the bitter end.

Yeah if she was innocent why did she stop racing? Why didn't she keep training and say it was nothing and keep with her program and race the world championships?

Like Lance, hey, never tested positive but run to the lawyers as soon as it looks like the game is up.

I do not mean this to be insulting. I wonder if you have thought through the exact chain of events. She was training for the worlds, not a routine race. The accusation true or false immediately ruined her mental preparation for an event as big as the worlds. She was a long shot anyway but the legal proceeding added 50 pounds to her head that would be impossible to carry up even the smallest hill.

Longo is the closest thing that women's racing has to a professional. Her results are second to none by a huge margin. The fact that as cycling has become more global and the UCI is still using methods that even a mailman would think are old school are pretty clear.
The best bike racer ever to be a member of the French fed should have been given not only the benefit of the doubt, but modern procedures should be in place that don't allow anybody not even the grande dame of women's racing to come up w BS like I don't have email or a phone. Complete BS from the person saying it and to the person accepting it from a top pro athlete .

There are men and women racers, who are suspended w some pending. The excuse that you can't be reached is stupid . Longo had to ride past 20 places that have interweb access even in the smallest town in Colorado. The feds and teams need to start acting like a professional sport rather than let the press and everybody involved act like it's 1980 and that a French champion is training out in the Bordeaux countryside. Cell and smartphones are the norm, in the US you can get a prepaid phone w 500 minutes for 35 bucks.

Instead of an extra jersey or helmet maybe the federation can give each elite rider a loaner phone to be used to check in everyday before worlds or the Olympics. I am sure there is a cell phone company that would comp 30 or 40 phones w an 8 week shelf life for sponsorship acknowledgement .Or the couple of 1000 dollars it would cost for every member of every team to get a phone would pay for itself.

The shame and stupidity that this incident has brought on the athletes and the federation are worth that much in my opinion . Her 59 French championships and 13 World Championship titles would make the 40 or 50 euros to get her a phone while traveling appear a small cost to avoid the testing no show/contact problem.

If every federation doesn't have a check in 2 or 3 times a week policy for all national team members via email or phone nothing is learned from this fiasco. The UCI drops the ball at every opportunity.

If you were innocent of doping you would not be missing 3 tests. if you were a pro you would know about the testing procedures and always inform your federation of your whereabouts, you would have the latest communication technology in order that you can be contacted.

And after 30+ years racing as a pro one would imagine an athlete to have a strong mentality that this would not put them off. it never put Armstrong off did it?

Longo dopes, no doubt. I hope J Papp's records can prove it.

Longo was still supplying her whereabouts. She knew she was still in the testing pool.

So freaking annoying.

Frustration.

Yes but they will only serve to prove the case against her husband...and Longo will get to finish her career in Olympics 2012. Though I suspect her performance may be more pedestrian, a la those impacted by Landis's disclosure of doping methodologies (and allegations against certain riders) before the 2010 Tour de France (when they were unable to transfuse later in the race after FL revealed the timing, volume and masking procedures for GT blood-boosting and pointed finger at them).

Jeannie, consider yourself duly informed. But we all know that your results will suck from here on out. And you'll get to blame that on the aging process.

Ask yourself why. She didn't want it. The Federation didn't want it. This whole "investigation" was more BS.

If the French Federation did want to find out if JL doped they would have asked the Feds in the USA for the evidence parcel on Joe. But they probably knew already and probably had known for years. See post 178.

As so eloquently put by "Just some guy" - "no wonder this sport is in the toilet."

Curtain comes down. All actors exit right. LA's legal team will be whopping with delight.

Why would they be whooping with delight since Armstrong's case has nothing to do with violating a sporting Federation's rules?

Maybe the accusations on Sept 9th, plus the fact that her father was extremely ill (he died Sept 23rd I believe) were a bit much for her (she was due to race sept 20th).

This thread really makes a mountain out of mole hill!

In the end, as l'arriviste wrote a few hours ago #203

So, there was an oversight from the part of the French anti-doping agency. This type of things happens all the time, doesn't it? Every year the same French tax form is sent to me 3 times although my name and address are correct on all 3. It's bureauceracy for you. Big deal, 2 of them go to the waste basket.

Now, that does not mean anything about whether Jeannie Longo is clean or not.

The fact that Joe Papp takes advantage of the situation to ressuscitate a 4 year-old story never heard of before (except for innuendos) in order to see his name in the papers does not bring much light on the matter, specially considering that he says that the incriminating e-mails have been erased from his computer.

Seeing a conspiracy in all this seems rather far-fetched.

Jeannie will NEVER suck.
Never did, never will.
Do your homework fcol.

She may well represent her Country at the Olympics for the 8th time next year.
The Big Dance.
At 54 years of age fcol again.

Of course she will not medal. She hasn't for over ten years.
But she will be awesome. If she competes, lines up at the start - awesome.
